Social support as a way of coping with relationship breakup during asolescence

Abstract:

Cílem mojí práce bylo zjistit, do jaké míry a jakým způsobem využívají adolescenti při zvládání rozchodů sociální oporu a jakou roli sociální podpora v období zvládání rozchodů hraje. Zaměřila jsem se na to, nakolik je pro adolescenty důležitá sociální opora v této situaci, u koho ji vyhledávají, jak jim okolí pomáhá vyrovnat se s rozchodem a zvládnout jej. Pro svůj výzkum jsem zvolila kvalitativní metodu, konkrétně polostrukturovaný rozhovor. Vedla jsem rozhovory s deseti respondenty ve věkovém rozmezí 19 až 21 let, kteří za sebou mají rozchod s partnerem. V teoretické části jsem se zabývala interpersonálními vztahy v adolescenci, blíže vztahy partnerskými, rozchody a sociální oporou. V empirické části jsem popsala metodu získávání respondentů, výzkumný vzorek, metodu sběru dat a způsob práce se získanými daty. Data jsem analyzovala v rámci vertikální a horizontální analýzy. Z výsledků bych uvedla to, že pro dospívající je z hlediska zvládání rozchodů sociální opora velice důležitá. Pro dívky je tato opora důležitější než pro chlapce, ale i u nich má sociální opora význam. Mezi nejvýznamnější důvody, proč mladí lidé sociální oporu ve svém okolí vyhledávají, patří potřeba podělit se o své pocity, získat ujištění a celou situaci si za pomoci ostatních ujasnit. Mezi nejčastější zdroje sociální opory patří kamarádi, matka a blízký kamarád bývalého partnera. Jeho důležitost je respondenty vysvětlována tím, že jim přináší nové informace o tom, jak celou situaci může vnímat bývalý partner a pokud je kamarádem příslušník druhého pohlaví, je důležitý jeho odlišný pohled na svět, který respondentům pomáhá pochopit druhého. Výsledky mé práce by mohly být přínosné pro všechny dospívající a pro jejich blízké okolí, které jim pomáhá zvládat stresové situace.

Abstract:

The purpose of the study was to find out how much and in what way the adolescent people use the help of social support to cope with relationship break ups and what role the social support plays at the time of separation. I focused the research on the importance of the social support for the adolescents, which people they are seeking the support from and how others help them to cope with the situations when the relationships come to an end and the different ways of dealing with it. For my research I selected qualitative method of semi-structured interview specifically constructed for this study. I have interviewed ten respondents in the age range of 19 to 21, all of which had the experience of relationship break ups. In the theoretical part of the study I focused on the interpersonal relationships during adolescence, specifically partner relationships, break ups and social support. In the empiric part of my study I described the used methods of selecting the group of respondents, characteristics of the research group, the methods of data collecting and processing. The obtained data was processed via method of vertical and horizontal analysis. The study concluded that the social support is very important for young people at times of the partnership break ups. This was more evident for females than males but even for male respondents the social support had some significance. Amongst the most important reasons why young people seek the social support at times of break ups is the need to share their feelings, gain assurance and come to terms with the situation. The most common sources of social support are friends, mothers and best friends of the ex partners. The respondents explained that the ex boyfriend’s or girlfriend’s best friends were able to help them to understand the whole situation, giving new information about the perception of the break up by the partner; if the best friend was the opposite sex, then their point of view was helping the respondent to understand the feelings of the ex partner and learn how others perceive “the world”. The results of my study could be beneficial to adolescent people and their circle of support, relatives and friends who help them to deal with the stress at the time of relationship break ups.
