Semiotic Analysis of Media Discourse: Analysis of Gender in Selected British and Slovak Television Commercials

Abstract:

The thesis examines the issue of gender portrayal in media discourse and the way stereotypes are used in British and Slovak contexts. The hypothesis of the thesis is that although products are marketed at a national level by commercials aimed specifically at national audience, due to long-term globalization and international character of corporations owning the products, the rate and the way of gender portrayal and gender stereotyping is comparable between the United Kingdom and Slovakia. The method of analysis of primary sources is used to evaluate the statistical data concerning male and female characters in selected television commercials. The method of analysis of secondary sources is applied to study information about gender, details about the past and present state of portrayal of men and women in the media and the information about stereotypes valid in the two societies. The method of comparative analysis evaluates television commercials from the period between 2006 and 2012. The main goals of the thesis are to describe the portrayal of men and women in television commercials for British and Slovak products, to determine whether and in what way stereotypical portrayals and sexual objectification are used in the two societies and compare the results of the analysis according to individual product groups and origin of the products.

Abstract:

Predkladaná práca skúma otázku zobrazovania rodu v mediálnom diskurze a spôsob využívania stereotypného zobrazovania mužov a žien v britskom a slovenskom kontexte. Hypotéza je, že hoci sú reklamy na národné produkty určené konkrétne pre divákov daného národa, z dôvodu globalizácie trhu a médií a medzinárodného charakteru korporácií, ktoré produkty vlastnia, je spôsob zobrazovania rodu a rodových stereotypov porovnateľný v oboch krajinách. Metóda analýzy primárnych zdrojov sa používa na vyhodnotenie štatistických dát týkajúcich sa mužských a ženských postáv vo vybraných televíznych reklamách. Metóda analýzy sekundárnych zdrojov sa uplatňuje pri skúmaní informácií o rode, histórii a súčasnom stave zobrazovania mužov a žien v médiách a stereotypoch platných v daných spoločnostiach. Metóda komparatívnej analýzy vyhodnocuje vybrané televízne reklamy z obdobia rokov 2006-2012. Hlavnými cieľmi práce sú opis zobrazovania mužov a žien v televíznych reklamách vybraných britských a slovenských produktov, zistenie či a akým spôsobom sú v daných spoločnostiach využívané stereotypné zobrazenia a sexuálna objektifikácia a vzájomné porovnanie výsledkov analýzy televíznych reklám na základe jednotlivých produktových skupín a krajiny pôvodu produktov.
