Ways of Vilém Závada: The Poet's Work from the Perspectives of Quantitative Linguistics and Teaching

Abstract:

Diplomová práce analyzuje básnické dílo Viléma Závady pomocí metod kvantitativní lingvistiky. U básní měříme index slovního bohatství (MATTR), aktivity (Q) popř. deskriptivity (D), průměrné délky slova (ATL) a vzdálenosti mezi slovesy (VD). Výsledky poté interpretujeme na konkrétních básních. Analýzou chceme zjistit, zda existuje kvantitativní rozdíl mezi ranějšími a pozdními Závadovými sbírkami a zda došlo z hlediska zkoumaných indexů k proměně autorovy poetiky v 50. letech. V následující didaktické kapitole vybíráme 5 textů, které podle nás vykazují didaktický potenciál. Představujeme, v čem tento potenciál tkví a jak s básněmi pracovat ve výuce, přičemž využíváme i naměřené hodnoty indexů.

Abstract:

This master's thesis analyses the work of a poet Vilém Závada through methods of quantitative linguistics. Vocabulary richness (MATTR), activity (Q) or descriptiveness (D), average tokens length (ATL), and verb distances (VD) are being measured. The results are later interpreted on the grounds of selected poems. The aim of the analysis is to determine whether there is a quantitative difference between Závada's earlier and older poetry collections and if the author's poetry in the 1950s changed in the scope of the examined indexes. There are five texts introduced in the following didactic chapter which were chosen for their didactic potential. The core of the potential is explained, and the manner of how to work with these poems in classes ? using the measured index values in the process ? is suggested.
