Holy Trinity from the Church of Assumption of the Virgin at Opava

Abstract:

Pozdně gotický deskový obraz Nejsvětější Trojice je součástí barokního oltáře v kapli zasvěcené Panně Marii Lurdské v konkatedrále Nanebevzetí Panny Marie v Opavě. Malba zobrazuje Nějsvětější Trojici v ikonografickém motivu Trůnu milosti, obklopenou symboly čtyř evangelistů. Podle dochovaných pramenů je deska datována do roku 1452. Z formálního hlediska je obraz syntézou rozmanitých vlivů, které v 15. století přicházely z okolních zemí a působily na umění českého Slezska. Mísí se zde rysy tradičních stylů s prvky, ohlašujících pozdně gotické tendence, při zachování silného konservatismu. Podle dosavadního badatelského výzkumu je obraz na jedné straně dáván do kontextu s českým uměleckým prostředím a na straně druhé s malopolským malířstvím kolem poloviny 15. století. Desková malba je dnes součástí církevní sbírky a spadá do vlastnictví Římskokatolické farnosti Panny Marie v Opavě. O nynější podobu obrazu se zasloužila ak. mal. Romana Balcarová v roce 2006, která provedla odborný restaurátorský zásah.

Abstract:

The Late Gothic painting of the Holy Trinity is part of the baroque altar in the chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes in the church of the Assumption in Opava. The painting shows the Holy Trinity in a Throne of Grace iconographic motif, surrounded by symbols of the four evangelists. According to traditional sources, the panel dates back to the year 1452. From a formal point of view, the image synthesizes the diverse influences which came from neighboring countries in the 15th century and influenced the art of Czech Silesia. It features a mixture of traditional styles with elements announcing late Gothic tendencies whilst maintaining a strong conservatism. According to current scholarly research, on the one hand, the picture belongs in the context of the Czech art scene and, on the other hand, with painting of Lesser Poland of the mid-15th century. The wood-panel painting is now part of church collections and belongs to the Roman Catholic parish of Our Lady in Opava. The current appearance of the painting is thanks to Roman Balcarová, who carried out the professional restoration in 2006.
