Analysis of association between body dissatisfaction and family, partnership and sex life among women aged thirty and more

Abstract:

Cílem práce byla analýza souvislosti mezi tělesnou spokojeností a partnerským, rodinným a sexuálním životem žen ve věku 30 a více let a jejich BMI. Dotazník vyplnilo 243 respondentek ve věku 30–66 let. Role věku zůstala částečně neobjasněna. Mezi tělesnou spokojeností a věkem nebyla nalezena signifikantní korelace, a tělesná spokojenost se tedy jeví být konstantní napříč věkem. Nicméně v modelu spolu s BMI a sexuální spokojeností se věk stává signifikantním prediktorem. Lze tedy uvažovat o dalších v modelu nekontrolovaných faktorech, které znásobují účinek věku. Jako nejsilnější prediktor tělesné spokojenosti se ukázalo být BMI. Čím vyšší BMI ženy mají, tím vyšší míru tělesné nespokojenosti zažívají. Jinými slovy ženy chtějí být hubenější, než jsou. Lze se domnívat, že u žen dochází k přijetí hubeného ideálu krásy. Pokud tuto definici krásy nesplňují, jsou se svým tělem více nespokojené. Co se týče sexuálního života ženy, čím spokojenější se sexem žena je, tím je spokojenější i se svým tělem. Ačkoliv frekvence sexu pozitivně souvisí se sexuální spokojeností, nebyl nalezen žádný vztah mezi frekvencí sexu a tělesnou spokojeností. Tento výsledek je v rozporu s předpokladem, že sexuální touha partnera/partnerky, a tedy sexuální aktivita, může být chápána jako neverbální pozitivní zpětná vazba ohledně tělesného vzhledu a pozitivně ovlivňovat vnímání vlastního těla. Výsledky analýzy nepodpořily žádný vztah mezi tělesnou spokojeností a typem rodinného či partnerského stavu ženy. Lze usuzovat, že pouze manželský status či romantický vztah nechrání ženu od zažívání stejné míry tělesné nespokojenosti, jako kdyby byla nezadaná, svobodná, rozvedená či ovdovělá.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis was an analysis of association between body dissatisfaction and partnership and family status, women’s sex life and BMI. 243 respondents, aged 30–66, filled out the questionnaire. The role of age remains partially unclear. There was no significant correlation between age and body dissatisfaction. Nonetheless age became a significant predictor in the model alongside BMI and sexual satisfaction. Other factors entering the model and multiplying the effect of age must be considered. BMI was the strongest predictor of body dissatisfaction, meaning the higher BMI women stated, the more dissatisfied with their body they were, in other words women wish to be thinner than they are. It can be assumed, that these women accepted and internalized the thin beauty standard. When they do not meet this beauty standard, they are more dissatisfied with their bodies. As far as women’s sex life is concerned, the more women are satisfied sexually, the more they are satisfied with their bodies. Even though frequency of sex is positively associated with sexual satisfaction, there was no relationship between frequency of sex and body dissatisfaction. This is contradictory to the assumption that sexual desire of the partner and sexual activity can be translated as a nonverbal positive feedback and influence one’s body perception. Relationship and family status showed no association with body dissatisfaction. It is possible that only the status is not enough to protect women from feeling the same level of dissatisfaction as if they were single, unmarried, divorced or widowed.
