Securitization and Desecuritization: social construction of threats during the 2015 European migration crisis

Abstract:

Tato bakalářské práce se zabývá analýzou příčin vzniku strachu z uprchlíků z arabských zemí u občanů EU se vznikem migrační krize v roce 2015 a dále možnou strategií k dekonstrukci tohoto fenoménu. Práce se snaží prokázat, zda vedlo jednání a postoje politiků v médiích v době migrační krize a v následujícím období, k sekuritizaci. Teoretický rámec této práce a jednotlivé protagonisty jevu sekuritizace, jsou definovány dle Kodaňské školy, jíž je formulován koncept sekuritizace jako takové. V praktické části se práce věnuje obsahové analýze a frekvenční statistice obrazových médií v letech 2014 - 2019. Dále jsou provedeny řízené otevřené rozhovory. Závěrem je zkonstatováno, že média byla využívána aktéry sekuritizace, tedy politiky, k vlivu na občany, nicméně nebylo prokázáno, že by tímto vlivem docházelo k jasnému a úspěšnému sekuritizačnímu pohybu.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the analysis of the causes of fear of refugees from Arab countries among citizens of the EU with the emergence of the migration crisis in 2015, and a possible strategy to deconstruct this phenomenon. The thesis seeks to prove whether the behaviour and attitudes of politicians in the media during the migration crisis and in the following period led to securitization. The theoretical framework of this work and the individual protagonists of the securitization phenomenon are defined according to the Copenhagen School, which formulates the concept of securitization as such. The practical part deals with the content analysis and frequency statistics of image media in the years 2014 - 2019. Furthermore, qualitative open interviews are carried out. In conclusion, it has been noted that the media have been used by the actors of securitization, that is, politics, to influence citizens, but it has not been shown that this influence would lead to a clear and successful securitization movement.
