Kant's Categorical Imperative

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá Kantovým kategorickým imperativem, jak jej Kant vysvětluje v díle Základy metafyziky mravů. Jsou zde probrány první dvě formulace tohoto imperativu a je zde vysvětleno, jak může kategorický imperativ platit jako přírodní zákon. Celá práce je rozdělena do dvou částí, přičemž první vysvětluje pojmy, se kterými Kantova nauka o morálce pracuje v první části Základů. Důležitý je pojem povinnosti, který úzce souvisí s kategorickým imperativem, neboť ten právě tuto povinnost přikazuje. Dalším pojmem je pojem morálního zákona, z nějž nám tyto povinnosti plynou. V závěru první části je také vysvětlen postup, kterým Kant dospěl k nejvyššímu principu morálky, což je vyvrcholení jeho zkoumání v první části jeho díla. Druhá část se zabývá již výhradně pojmem kategorického imperativu, který Kant definuje ve druhé části Základů. Zde je ukázán jak jeho postup při hledání tohoto imperativu, tak i jakým způsobem se imperativ vztahuje na lidi a následně je představen explicitně ve své první formulaci a následuje zkoumání formulace druhé a vysvětlení vztahu mezi nimi. Pomocí druhé formulace jsou nakonec posouzeny příklady jednání, které ukazují různé druhy povinností.

Abstract:

This thesis examines Kant's concept of categorical imperative, as Kant explains it in his work Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals. The thesis focuses on the first two formulations of this imperative and it explains how categorical imperative can be valid as the law of nature. The whole thesis is divided into two parts, while the first one sheds light on the concepts which are used in Kant's moral theory. The most important is the concept of duty, which is closely related to categorical imperative as the imperative orders this duty. Another concept is concept of moral law of which these duties arise. The conclusion of the first part clarifies the procedure which Kant used to reach the highest principal of morality which is culmination of his examination in the first part of his work. The second part deals exclusively with the concept of categorical imperative to which Kant gets in the second part of Groundwork. Here we show both the procedure of searching for this imperative and also how the imperative relates to people. Consequently, it is introduced in an explicit way in its first formulation. It is followed by examining second formulation and explaining the relation between them. Finally some examples of action are judged with the use of second formulation, which shows different kinds of duties.
