Content analysis of press releases announced by the Brno City Police Department

Abstract:

Předložená práce na téma Obsahová analýza tiskových zpráv Městské policie Brno (“MPB”) pojednává o problematice nadvlády mužů ve společnosti a z ní vyplývajícího znevýhodnění a útlaku žen. Práce rovněž vypovídá o způsobu, jakým je tato nadvláda reprezentována v tiskových zprávách MPB. Hlavní výzkumná otázka této práce zní: Jaké specifické formy nadvlády mužů jsou užívány ve společnosti dle informací v tiskových zprávách Městské policie Brno? A Jaký obraz o těchto formách nadvlády mužů tiskové zprávy Městské policie vytvářejí? Předmětem analýzy byly tiskové zprávy MPB za červen až prosinec 2014. Data byla analyzována za pomoci kvalitativní obsahové analýzy. Hlavním konceptem této práce je nadvláda mužů, jak o ní píše Pierre Bourdieu (2000) ve stejnojmenné knize Nadvláda mužů. V teoretické části jsou představeny rovněž další koncepty, které jsou propojeny celou prací. Konkrétně se jedná o symbolické násilí, domácí, fyzické a sexuální násilí a koncept habitu. V analytické části se dozvídáme, jak je výše zmíněného násilí užíváno k demonstraci mužské nadvlády, jak jazyk tiskových zpráv reprodukuje symbolické násilí, či jaký vliv na kriminalitu žen má jejich habitus a postavení ve společnosti.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis on the topic of Content analysis of press releases announced by the Brno City Police Department (“BCPD”) is focused on the issue of male dominance within the society and the resulting discrimination and oppression of women as it is presented in the BCPD press releases. The main research question of this thesis states as follows: What specific forms of male dominance do take place in the society according to the content of BCPD press releases? And what overall picture of these forms of male dominance do these BCPD press releases create? For the purpose of this thesis the press releases announced by BCPD since June 2014 till December 2014 have been analyzed with the use of qualitative content analysis. The key theoretical concept of male dominance is for the purpose of this thesis based on the work of Pierre Bourdieu (2000) as it is described in his book Masculine Domination. In the theoretical part of this thesis, there are introduced other concepts that are linked across the entire work. These concepts include above all symbolic, domestic, physical and sexual violence as well as the concept of habitus. The analytical part of this thesis contains the analysis of how the above mentioned concepts of violence are used for male dominance demonstration, how the language of the BCPD press releases reproduces the symbolic violence and what is the impact of the female habitus and their social status on the female criminality.
