Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá zobrazením D. H. Lawrence jako feministy, nebo šovinisty, konkrétně v dílech ‘Synové a milenci’ a ‘Milenec lady Chatterleyové’. Lawrencova kritika vychází především od Kate Millettové a jejího díla ‘Sexuální politika’ a Simone de Beauvoir a jejího díla ‘Druhé pohlaví’, jejichž kritické materiály jsou diskutovány v první kapitole. Práce v druhé kapitole poskytuje syntézu dalších kritických teorií od literárních kritiků (Blanchard, Harris, Arcana,..), obojí na obranu Lawrence a jeho kritiku, které vycházejí ze zásahu Milletové. Práce se také detailně zaměřuje na způsob, jakým tyto kritické debaty zasáhly Lawrencovu reputaci jako feministy a šovinisty. Třetí kapitola nabízí podrobné komparativní čtení ve vztahu ke čtyřem vybraným motivům, vztahujícím se k hlavnímu tématu v dílech ‘Synové a milenci’ a ‘Milenec lady Chatterleyové’. Syntéza kritických materiálů a komparativní čtení jsou také podnětem diskuze v závěru práce, který podrobněji rozebírá, jestli byl Lawrence feminista, nebo šovinista.

Abstract:

This dissertation focuses on D. H. Lawrence´s portrayal as a woman´s writer or a misogynist, particularly in his novels ‘Sons and Lovers’ and ‘Lady Chatterley's Lover’. Lawrence´s criticism stems mainly from Kate Millett's ‘Sexual Politics’ and Simone de Beauvoir's ‘The Second sex’, whose critical theories are discussed in the first chapter. By considering other literary critics (Blanchard, Harris, Arcana,..) in chapter two the dissertation provides a synthesis of the critical materials, both in defense of Lawrence and critical of Lawrence, stemming from Millett´s intervention. This dissertation relates in closer detail on how this debate has touched upon Lawrence´s reputation as a woman´s writer. The third chapter offers a close comparative reading in relation to the four selected motifs bearing upon the main theme in Sons and Lovers and Lady Chatterley's Lover. The synthesis of the critical materials and the comparative reading are also discussed in the conclusion, which further discusses whether Lawrence was a woman´s writer or a misogynist.
