Pocket Money as a Tool of Economic Socialization

Abstract:

Nedostatek finanční gramotnosti jedince má vliv jak na jeho osobní finance, tak následně jeho jednání ovlivňuje i finance veřejné. Z tohoto důvodu je důležité věnovat se osobní finanční zodpovědnosti a jedním z nástrojů může být využívání kapesného jako formy učení, jak nakládat s finančními prostředky v budoucnu. Cílem práce bylo u obyvatel s trvalým bydlištěm v Ústeckém kraji a narozenými mezi roky 1989 a 2004 zjistit, jaký vliv má kapesné, které v dětství pobírali od svých rodičů, na jejich ekonomickou socializaci a tím i míru ekonomické zodpovědnosti v současnosti. K získání potřebných dat bylo využito anonymní dotazníkové šetření a výsledky byly následně vyhodnoceny pomocí statistického t-testu, chí-kvadrát testu nezávislosti, Kruskal-Wallis testu a regresní analýzy. Konečné výsledky ukázaly, že kapesné má vliv na hodnotu ekonomické zodpovědnosti, a je tedy vhodné jej při ekonomické socializaci jedince využívat. Výsledky statistických testů dále prokázaly, že pohlaví má vliv na hodnotu ekonomické zodpovědnosti bez ohledu na pobírání kapesného v dětství a slabá závislost pohlaví se prokázala u plánu využít systém kapesného u potomků. Co se týká hlavní ekonomické činnosti respondentů, zde existuje rozdíl jen u dvojice student a zaměstnaný(á). Výsledky regresní analýzy také prokázaly, že významnými faktory ovlivňující hodnotu ekonomické zodpovědnosti je současný věk respondenta, schopnost v dětství ušetřit na dražší věc, sdílení informací ohledně rodinných příjmů a výdajů. Naopak pravidelnost kapesného, interakce rodičů do hospodaření s kapesným, plnění povinností za kapesné nebo snížení kapesného za prohřešky, nemají statisticky významný vliv. Výsledky studie tak poskytují užitečné informace pro budoucí výzkumy, které se zaměřují na specifické aspekty kapesného a jeho vliv na socializační procesy a ekonomickou zodpovědnost jednotlivců.

Abstract:

An individual´s lack of financial literacy affects both their personal and consequently also public finances. Therefore, it is important to address personal financial responsibility and one of the tools can be the use of pocket money as a form of learning how to manage financial resources in the future. The aim of this work was to investigate the influence of the pocket money residents of the Ústí nad Labem region, born between 1989 and 2004, received from their parents during childhood on their economic socialization and thus on the level of their economic responsibility in the present. An anonymous questionnaire survey was used to obtain the necessary data and the results were then evaluated using statistical t-test, chi-square test of independence, Kruskal-Wallis test and regression analysis. Final results showed that pocket money has an effect on the level of economic responsibility, and it is appropriate to use it in the economic socialization of an individual. Results of statistical tests further demonstrated that gender has an effect on the level of economic responsibility regardless of the receipt of pocket money in childhood and weak gender dependence was found regarding the plan to use the pocket money system for offspring. As far as the main economic activity of the respondents is concerned, there is only a difference here for the pair of student and employed. The results of the regression analysis also proved that the significant factors influencing the level of economic responsibility were the respondent´s current age, ability to save for more expensive items in childhood, and sharing information about family incomes and expenses. On the contrary, regularity of pocket money, parental interaction in managing pocket money, fulfilling responsibilities to receive pocket money or its reduction for misdemeanors do not have statistically significant effects. Thus, the results of this work provide useful information for future research that focuses on specific aspects of pocket money and its impact on individuals´ socialization processes and economic responsibility.
