Social anxiety, online self-disclosure and the effect of perceived controllability of online communication among Facebook users in the period of emerging adulthood

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo prozkoumat souvislost mezi sociální úzkostností, veřejným sebe-otevíráním na Facebooku a vlivem percepce kontrolovatelnosti komunikace na Facebooku (tj. přikládaná důležitost možnosti promyslet si obsah a formulaci sdělení) mezi uživateli Facebooku v období vynořující se dospělosti. Předpokládala jsem, že sociální úzkostnost bude negativně souviset s veřejným sebe-otevíráním na Facebooku a že přikládaná důležitost kontrolovatelnosti komunikace bude tento vztah zprostředkovávat. Výzkumný soubor zahrnoval 371 respondentů a byl vybrán metodou virtuální sněhové koule na Facebooku. Faktorová analýza odhalila, že škála online sebe-otevírání Parkse a Floyda ve veřejném prostředí Facebooku nevykazuje konzistentnost. Na úrovni jednotlivých položek se ukázaly některé vztahy signifikantní, avšak jednalo se o velmi slabé souvislosti svědčící o minimálním vlivu sociální úzkostnosti na sebe-otevírání na Facebooku. Ačkoliv míra sociální úzkostnosti slabě korelovala s přikládanou důležitostí možnosti promyslet si formulaci sdělení, tato následně nesouvisela s mírou sebe-otevírání na Facebooku. Nebyly tedy splněny předpoklady pro mediovaný vztah. Pro konečné potvrzení či zamítnutí hypotéz je potřeba dalšího výzkumu, který bude pracovat s konzistentní škálou veřejného sebe-otevírání na Facebooku.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between social anxiety, public self-disclosure on Facebook and the effect of perception of controllability of communication on Facebook (i.e. given importance of the possibility to think about content and formulation of communications) among users of Facebook during the period of emerging adulthood. I assumed that social anxiety will be negatively associated with public self-disclosure on Facebook and that given importance on the controllability of communication will mediate this relationship. The research sample consisted of 371 respondents and was selected by a virtual snowball sampling method using Facebook. Factor analysis revealed that the Parks and Floyd online self-disclosure scale does not show consistency in the Facebook public environment. On the level of individual items some relationships proved significant, nevertheless it was a very weak connection indicative of minimal effect of social anxiety on self-disclosure on Facebook. Although the level of social anxiety slightly correlated with the importance given to the possibility to rethink the formulation of communication, subsequently, this was not associated with the level of self-disclosure on Facebook. Thus, the conditions for mediated relationships were not fulfilled. For definitive confirmation or rejection of hypotheses is needed further research, which will work with a consistent scale of public self-disclosure on Facebook.
