Crystal chemistry of monazite from granitic pegmatites

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá krystalochemií minerálů skupiny monazitu. Teoretická část představuje rešerši literárních údajů o struktuře, chemickém složení, substitucích a jednotlivých minerálech této skupiny. V praktické části byly zpracovány mikrosondové analýzy neobvykle uranem bohatých (0,025-0,08 apfu. U) monazitů-(Ce) z pegmatitů z Dolních Borů. Všechny studované vzorky vykazují velmi vysoké poměry U/Th (1,36-3,92), zanedbatelné obsahy Si a vysoké obsahy Ca. Uran a thorium tedy do jejich struktury vstupují téměř výhradně pomocí cheralitové substituce. Monazity se srovnatelně vysokými obsahy U a poměry U/Th byly dosud kromě Dolních Borů popsány jen z několika lokalit na světě. Na základě získaných dat, srovnání se světovými výskyty a publikovanými experimentálními studiemi se zdá pravděpodobné, že vysoké obsahy uranu vstupují do monazitu vždy spolu s Ca, tedy pomocí cheralitové substituce.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with crystal chemistry of monazite-group minerals. Theoretical part provides literature data on structure, chemical composition, substitution mechanisms and individual minerals of this mineral group. In practical part, microprobe analyses of unusually uranium enriched (0,025-0,08 apfu. U) monazite-(Ce) from pegmatites near Dolní Bory village (Czech Republic) were studied. All investigated samples show very high U/Th ratios (1,36-3,92), negligible amounts of Si and high concentrations of Ca. Therefore, uranium and thorium enter the structure almost exclusively via the cheralite-type substitution. Monazite with comparable concentrations of U and U/Th ratios has been only exceptionally reported from other localities in the world. Based on the obtained data, comparism with similar occurrences in the world, and published experimental studies, it seems probable that high amounts of U enter monazite structure together with Ca, i.e. via the cheralite-type substitution.
