The Reflection of the Middle Class in Victorian Novel

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis explores the reflection of the middle class in Victorian Novel. The literary piece chosen for this reflection is Dombey and Son by Charles Dickens. The research is concerning the middle class appearance, its attributes, features of its representatives, and the way how it is described in Victorian novel. Focusing on just one novel enables to capture this extensive theme, and the analyzing to be more profound, and complex. The aim is to compare the theoretical historical facts to the information in the novel. The Research process consists of a couple of steps. Firstly, exploring source materials connected with given topic, collecting theoretical information and defining basic terms. Secondly, applying gained knowledge while analyzing the particular novel. This method enables consulting facts and fiction, and exploring how much do they actually match or not. The theoretical part of this research deals with several major background areas which exploration is necessary for orientation in given topic. There is considered, among others, Victorian period, subsequently the state of novel in Victorian times, and finally a brief introduction to Dickens, and Dombey and Son. Last but not least there is explored the Victorian middle class as such, specifically its development and reasons of it, gender issue, treatment of children, typical values and features, domestic life and lifestyle in general etc. As regards the analyzing of the chosen novel, this section is concerned with exploring particular references and mentions of the Victorian middle class in Dombey and Son. Collecting information in the previous theoretical-background-part serves as a basis for the analyzing, and enables to identify the passages reflecting the middle class in chosen Victorian novel.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá reflexí střední třídy ve viktoriánském románu. Literární dílo vybrané pro tuto reflexi je Dombey a syn od Charlese Dickense. Díky zaměření se pouze na jeden román je možné lépe uchopit toto rozsáhlé téma a analýza daného tématu tak může být mnohem důkladnější a dostat se k jádru věci. Hlavním tématem je objevování toho, jak je v tomto románu popsána střední třída, její představitelé, jejich hodnoty a společné znaky. Cílem je porovnat teoretická historická fakta s informacemi nalezenými v tomto románu. Tato bakalářská práce je realizovaná ve dvou zásadních krocích. Za prvé je to získávání informací z teoretických podkladů spojených s daným tématem a definování základních znaků střední třídy a historických, sociálních a ekonomických faktů, které s tímto tématem souvisí. Za druhé jsou tyto teoretické informace využité v praxi při analyzování textu zvoleného románu. Tento postup umožňuje porovnávat historická fakta s informacemi v krásné literatuře a objevovat, jak moc jedno odpovídá druhému. Jak historické výzkumy, tak i krásná literatura reflektují tu samou dobu, ovšem jinak. Fikce může být nejen zdrojem cenných informací, ale také poskytnout zajímavý vhled do života viktoriánské střední střídy, který pouhá teorie postrádá. Teoretická část se zabývá několika základními okruhy, jejichž prozkoumáním je nutné pro orientaci v daném tématu. Mimo jiné je to viktoriánská doba obecně, stav románu v této době a nakonec stručný úvod ke zvolené novele, který se zabývá Dickensem a knihou Dombey a syn. Nakonec je popsána viktoriánská střední třída jako taková, zvláště její vývoj a důvody proč k němu došlo, dále je to genderová tématika, přístup k dětem, typické hodnoty, rodina, domov a životní styl obecně. Co se týká analýzy zvolené novely, tato část se zabývá zkoumáním jednotlivých zmínek a odkazů na střední viktoriánskou střední třídu v románu Dombey a syn. Informace získané v předchozí teoretické části slouží jako základ pro analýzu a usnadňují vyhledávání úryvků zmiňujících střední třídu.
