Populism, incivility and intolerance on the Internet: The case of the migration crisis in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Práce si klade za cíl prozkoumat vlivy populistické komunikace na jejího adresáta a jeho následné projevy neslušnosti a netolerance v online prostředí. Teoreticky přitom práce vychází z předešlých výzkumů, které se zaměřovaly na polarizující vlivy populismu a populistické komunikace ve veřejném prostoru. Případová studie se zaměřuje na období mezi roky 2013 a 2020 a tím pokrývá tzv. migrační krizi, která tematicky ohraničuje výzkum. Data, ze kterých práce vychází, byly získány z facebookových profilů vybraných českých politických stran a přidružených uživatelských komentářů, které byly následně analyzovány za pomoci binární logistické regrese. V práci docházíme k závěru, že přestože mají některé stylistické a obsahové faktory populistické komunikace pozitivní vliv na pravděpodobnost výskytu neslušnosti či netolerance v komunikaci adresáta, tak jako nejzásadnější faktor se jeví samotný populistický charakter autora příspěvku (politické strany), který převažuje nad faktory populistické komunikace v jeho projevu. Z hlediska pravděpodobnosti výskytu neslušnosti a netolerance pod příspěvky politických stran je tedy důležitější, kdo je autorem komunikace, než její samotný obsah.

Abstract:

The thesis aims to explore the effects of populist communication on its addressee and their consequent expressions of incivility and intolerance in the online environment. The thesis builds on previous researches focused on the polarizing effects of populism and populist communication in public space. The case study focuses on the period between 2013 and 2020 and thus covers the so-called migration crisis, which thematically limits this research. The data was obtained from the Facebook profiles of selected Czech political parties and associated user comments, and were analysed using binary logistic regression. The thesis concludes that although some stylistic and content factors of populist communication have a positive effect on the likelihood of incivility or intolerance in the addressee's communication, the most important factor appears to be the populist character of the author (political party), which outweighs the factors of populist communication in the speech. In terms of the likelihood of incivility and intolerance appearing in comments under the posts of political parties, the author of the communication is therefore more important than the content of the communication itself.
