Evaluation of the Republic of Türkiye's Macroeconomic Landscape: Political Economy Approach

Abstract:

This thesis examines the macroeconomic, political, and trade dynamics of the Republic of Türkiye between 1991 and 2023, focusing on the impact of political events on economic stability. The study analyses how monetary policies, including inflation control, interest rate adjustments, and exchange rate management, influence economic growth and social well-being. A mixed-method approach combines qualitative analysis from reports by the OECD, World Bank, and IMF with quantitative methods such as econometric modelling and time series analysis. Key economic indicators like GDP, inflation, unemployment, and foreign direct investment are examined using data from credible sources. The findings highlight that inflation and interest rate fluctuations significantly impact GDP, while political uncertainty has contributed to economic instability. The shift to a presidential system has further influenced policy decisions, leading to macroeconomic volatility. Despite periods of growth, income inequality and declining purchasing power remain challenges. Restoring central Bank independence, maintaining fiscal discipline, and implementing structural reforms are recommendations that will ensure sustainable economic growth. Strengthening monetary policies, fostering political stability, and addressing income disparities will also help stabilize Türkiye’s economy and promote long-term prosperity.
