Potential use of stoneflies (Plecoptera) for the bioindication of intermittent streams

Abstract:

První část práce je věnována porovnání velikostního spektra pošvatek ve vzorcích driftu a hyporeálu se strukturou populace pošvatek na povrchu dna na modelové vysychavé lokalitě Gránický potok. Některé studované taxony jako Capnia bifrons a rod Nemoura využívaly driftu zejména v období intenzivního růstu larev, což umožňovalo úspěšnou rekolonizaci znovuzaplaveného toku po vyschnutí. Ve vzorcích hyporeálu byla v rámci 3 srovnávaných habitatů nejvyšší preference peřejí, které využívaly malé instary dvou výše uvedených taxonů zejména v létě a na podzim. Nejvyšších hodnot dosahovaly jejich abundance ve vrstvách do hloubky 20 cm, přičemž larvy migrovaly do substrátu v době letního vyschnutí nejen z důvodu nastávající diapauzy (C. bifrons), ale i hledání vhodného refugia v intersticiálních prostorách (Nemoura spp.) Druhá část práce je věnována porovnání zastoupení druhů pošvatek na šesti párech vysychavých a permanentních toků, srovnání fáze jejich vývojových cyklů a potenciálu druhů pro bioindikaci permanence průtoku. Čtyři z nalezených druhů (Brachyptera risi, Isoperla tripartita, Nemoura cinerea a C. bifrons) vykazovaly preference pro vysychavé toky, zatímco čistě na permanentních tocích se vyskytovalo širší spektrum druhů z rodů Amphinemura, Dinocras, Isoperla, Leuctra, Perlodes a Protonemura. Srovnávání fází vývojových cyklů na lokalitách bylo možné pouze u několika taxonů (B. risi, I. tripartita a některé druhy rodu Nemoura). V některých případech bylo možné posunutí vývojového cyklu druhů interpretovat ve vztahu k délce předchozího vyschnutí lokalit (vliv diapauzy) či odlišnosti průměrných teplot vody během sledované části sezóny.

Abstract:

First part of this thesis was aimed at comparing the size spectrum of stoneflies in the drift and hyporheic samples with the population structure of stoneflies on the bottom surface in model intermittent locality Gránický stream. Some of the studied taxa as Capnia bifrons and Nemoura genus used the drift chiefly in the periods of rapid growth of their nymphs, which allowed successful recolonization of the reflooded stream after the period of drought. There was the highest preference of riffles amongst the three types of compared hyporheic samples. Those riffles were used by small instars of the two taxa mentioned above mainly in summer and autumn. The most abundant layers were those within the upper twenty centimeters. The nymphs migrated to the substratum in the period of summer drought due to forthcoming diapause (C. bifrons), but also due to searching for a suitable refuge in interstitial space (Nemoura spp.). The second part of the thesis is dedicated to comparing the representation of the stonefly species at six pairs of intermittent and permanent streams, comparing their life cycles and potential for indication of flow permanence. Four of the present species (Brachyptera risi, Isoperla tripartita, Nemoura cinerea and C. bifrons) showed the preference for intermittent streams, while the wider spectrum of species from genera Amphinemura, Dinocras, Isoperla, Leuctra, Perlodes and Protonemura showed the preference for permanent streams. The comparing of life cycle stages was possible only for some taxa (B. risi, I. tripartita and some species of Nemoura genus). In some cases, there was possible to interpret the shift of the life cycle in the relation to the length of previous drought at locality (effect of diapause) or in relation to the differences of the average water temperature during the studied part of the season.
