The Candidate Selection Process in the Main Political Parties of the Republic of South Africa

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je analýza výběru kandidátů v politických stranách Jihoafrické republiky. Konkrétně se zaměřujeme na nominační procesy třech nejvýznamnějších stran před parlamentními volbami 2014: ANC, DA a COPE. Práce tyto procesy posuzuje za pomocí modelu čtyř linií izraelských politologů Reuvena Hazana a Gideona Rahata. V tomto ohledu výzkum odpovídá na tyto otázky: kdo může kandidovat, kdo vybírá, zda jsou zastoupeny aspekty teritoriální či funkcionální decentralizace a jaký je způsob výběru. Úvodní kapitoly se zaměřují na dosavadní výzkum nominačních procesů a deskripci jihoafrických politických reálií. Následně jsou představeny zkoumané politické strany a podrobně analyzován jejich nominační proces, aby pak mohly být zařazeny na osy modelu. Práce využívá poznatky především z obsahové analýzy stranických dokumentů a z rozhovorů s představiteli stran.

Abstract:

The aim of this diploma thesis is an analysis of candidate selection processes in South African political parties. More specifically, we focus on the nominations of the three most important parties before the 2014 general election: ANC, DA and COPE. The thesis uses the four dimensions model suggested by Israeli political scientists Reuven Hazan and Gideon Rahat. In this way, the research answers these questions: who can stand for the election, who selects, how the parties consider territorial or social decentralization and what is the method of selection. The first part of the thesis focuses on previous researches and describes the South African political reality. Subsequently, we introduce the mentioned political parties and analyze their nomination process in detail to include them in the model. The thesis uses information from the content analysis of party documents and from interviews with representatives of the parties.
