Adaptation Method for Brain Computer Interface System

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá problematikou rozhraní mezi počítačem a mozkem (Brain computer interface, BCI). Toto rozhraní umožňuje přímou komunikaci člověka s počítačem ? zatím pouze směrem od člověka k počítači. V současné době má toto rozhraní potenciál zejména pro handicapované lidi. Teoretická část práce zahrnuje současnou problematiku přímé komunikace člověka s počítačem prostřednictvím elektroencefalogramu (EEG). EEG je nejčastěji používaný způsob záznamu aktivity mozku pro účely BCI. V systémech BCI je používána řada neurofyziologických signálů, tato práce je zaměřena pouze na komponentu P300 evokovaného potenciálu. V práci jsou tudíž popsány metody a způsoby zpracování, které se přímo používají pro zpracování tohoto potenciálu. V závěru teoretické části práce jsou také popsány možnosti adaptace a jejich využití v BCI systémech. Druhá část práce se věnuje návrhu a ověření originální adaptační metody pro systém BCI. Obvykle je nutné, aby každý subjekt před začátkem ovládání systému podstoupil trénovací fázi. Cílem práce je doplnit BCI systém, který může být ovládán libovolným subjektem, o adaptaci, díky níž po určité době ovládání dosáhne podobných výsledků, jako systém natrénovaný přímo pro jeden subjekt. Za tímto účelem je navržen koncept systému, který je následně doplňován o aspekty zlepšující jeho vlastnosti i výslednou úspěšnost. Základní myšlenka navržené adaptace je v získání trénovacích dat od subjektu během používání systému. Jak se ukázalo, za takto jednoduchou myšlenkou stojí řada komplikací. Problémy počínají nízkou úspěšností systému schopného klasifikovat libovolný subjekt a končí fyziologickou odlišností jednotlivých subjektů. Fyziologická odlišnost je příčinou obtížnosti nastavení parametrů systému. Práce ukazuje, že adaptace představuje cestu k vytvoření BCI systému schopného dobře porozumět libovolnému subjektu, který jej začne ovládat. Testování navrženého adaptačního postupu prokázalo jeho funkčnost. Je možné s jistou rezervou konstatovat, že postup dosahuje podobné úspěšnosti jako systém trénovaný pouze pro jediný subjekt. Pro porovnatelnost výsledků byly všechny testy provedeny na datech zveřejněných Hoffmanem, který se ve své práci zabýval vývojem BCI systému určeného pro jeden subjekt. Navržený postup byl dále ověřen na datech naměřených na KIV ZČU.

Abstract:

The dissertation work focuses on the matters of interface between the human brain and a computer (Brain-computer interface or BCI). This interface enables direct communication of a human being with a computer ? at this time, only in direction from the human towards the computer. In the mean time, there is a huge potential mainly for the handicapped people. The theoretical part of this work embraces current matters of direct communication between the human and the computer through the Electroencephalography (EEG). The EEG is the most often used tool for recording one?s brain activity with respect to BCI. There are number of neurophysiologic signals within the systems of BCI, however this work is directly aimed only at P300 component of evoked potential. There are also described possibilities of adaptation and their respective usage in the field of BCI systems in the conclusion of the work?s theoretical part. The second part of the work encompasses the proposal and verification of the original adaptation method for the BCI system. Usually, it is necessary that each subject undergoes a training phase prior controlling the system itself. The goal of this work is to supplement a BCI system usable by any arbitrary subject with an adaptation that would cause after a reasonable time the system to be yielding similar affectivity results as the system trained purposefully for only one subject. For this purpose there?s a system concept slated, which is further replenished by various aspects improving its features and results. The basic thought of this designed adaptation lies with acquisition of training data from the subject when using the system. As it has been shown, there are numerous difficulties behind such simple idea. The problems begin with the low rate of success of a system capable of classifying random subject and end with physiological differences of individual subjects. The physiological difference is the reason behind the difficulty of setting the system?s parameters. The work points out that the adaptation represents a way towards a creation of BCI system capable of good understanding of a random subject, who begins using the system. The testing of the proposed adaptation method proofed its functionality. It is possible ? with reasonable reserve ? to state that the method reaches similar success rates as the system trained only for one particular subject. In order all the data could be compared, all of the tests were run on data published by Hoffman, who focused his work on development of a BCI system aimed for a single subject. The proposed method has been further evaluated on the data from KIV ZČU.
