Nietzsche and Baroque Art: The Aesthetics of Human, All Too Human

Abstract:

Předmětem práce je Nietzschova estetika z druhé poloviny 70. let 19. století, v menší míře pak i to, co mělo na její konstituci klíčový vliv, tedy jeho raná epistemologie. V této oblasti totiž Nietzsche dospěl k následujícím závěrům: za vznik zkušenostních předmětů je kromě stimulu odpovědná i aktivita subjektu, kvůli které je již nelze považovat za kopie skutečnosti; jelikož se ale tato aktivita nerealizuje podle žádných pevných pravidel, dá se oproti Kantovi říci, že zkušenostní předměty vznikají arbitrárně a jsou tak zcela subjektivní. Jsou tedy vždy jen privátní metaforou či, jinak řečeno, uměleckým vyobrazením své předlohy. Tento posun zcela mění situaci na poli lidského vyjadřování. Zatímco totiž pravdu by k přesvědčení druhých stačilo pouze sdělit, metaforu je ostatním třeba vnutit. Samo Lidské, příliš lidské je pak knihou (mimo jiné) o tom, jaké metafory jsou typické pro tu kterou oblast společenského vystupování (tomu odpovídá Nietzschovo řazení hlav/kapitol). V hlavní části tohoto textu nás bude zajímat, pomocí jakých metafor se Nietzschemu zdálo, že svět znázorňují a tento obraz vnucují „umělci z povolání“. Zajímal se zejména o ty, kteří tím, že sdíleli jeho víru v nemožnost existence pravdivé výpovědi, vytvářeli metafory nejdůmyslnější a nejpřesvědčivější. Za takové považoval především umělce a řemeslníky raného a vrcholného baroka. Své počínání cítil o to naléhavěji, když zjistil, že barokní epistemologický skepticismus se začínal v mnoha oborech projevovat i během na oficiální rovině jinak zcela klasicistní doby gründerství, tedy během sedmé dekády 19. století. Sekce věnovaná estetice je rozdělena na pět kapitol, které mapují využívání metafor v oblasti (barokního) divadla, tance, urbanismu a architektury, výtvarného umění a literatury. Předchází jim prolog osvětlující reálie gründerské dekády.

Abstract:

The present thesis focuses on Nietzsche’s aesthetics in the second half of the seventh decade of the 19th Century and to a lesser extent also on the aspect essential in its constitution—his early epistemology. Nietzsche arrived at the following epistemological conclusions: Apart from the stimulus, the development of objects of experience is determined by the activity of a subject and, as a result of this, objects of experience cannot be regarded as copies of reality; because this activity does not adhere to any definitive rules, it can also be stated, in contrast to Kant, that experiential objects originate arbitrarily, thus they are entirely subjective. They are therefore always only a private metaphor or, in other words, an artistic depiction of their model. This shift significantly changes the situation of human expression. While conveying the truth would be sufficient to persuade others, the metaphor needs to be forced upon others. Human, all too human by itself is (apart from other topics) a book about metaphors typical for each specific domain of social expression (this is reflected in Nietzsche’s sequencing of subparts/chapters). In the main part of the present thesis, we will explore Nietzsche’s assumptions about metaphors which professional artists use to depict the world and which they force upon others. He was particularly interested in the artists who created the most intricate and persuasive metaphors, because they shared his belief in the impossibility of the existence of a truthful statement. He considered artists and artisans of early and middle baroque period to predominantly have this feature. He considered his action to be urgent when found out that baroque epistemological scepticism was becoming to manifest in many disciplines in the time of, officially absolutely classicist, gründerzeit, i.e. during the seventh decade of the 19th Century. The part of the thesis dedicated to the aesthetics is divided into five chapters, which map the use of metaphors in theatre, dance, urbanism and architecture, fine art, and literature. These chapters are preceded by a prologue which clarifies realia of the gründerzeit decade.
