Comparison of information practices of postgraduate students of FSS MU

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá informačními praktikami šestice vybraných doktorandů a doktorandek ze tří největších oborů na Fakultě sociálních studií Masarykovy univerzity. Činí tak proto, aby zjistila, jakou roli hraje akademická knihovna v podpoře vědeckých činností v rámci postgraduálního studia. Akademické knihovny v digitálním světě hledají nové hodnoty, kterými by ospravedlnily svou existenci. Diplomová práce popisuje informační praktiky doktorandů a doktorandek v kontextu vědeckých činností prostřednictvím fenomenologických rozhovorů a konstrukce informačních horizontů. Z výsledků vyplývá, jak a proč doktorandky a doktorandi akademické knihovny využívají nebo nevyužívají. Čtenáři a čtenářky se dozví, jak doktorandi a doktorandky identifikují a na základě jakých kritérií vybírají informační zdroje a jak filtrují a hodnotí kvalitu informací. Práce také zkoumá koncept prvků vědecké činnosti a identifikuje je v činnostech doktorandů a doktorandek. Tyto praktiky mohou být dalším vodítkem pro akademické knihovny, jaké služby by měly nabízet.

Abstract:

This master’s thesis deals with the information practices of six selected individual students from three largest doctoral programs at the Faculty of Social Studies at Masaryk University. It is trying to uncover the role of the faculty library in terms of supporting scientific activities related to doctoral students. Academic libraries are searching for new values to justify their existence in digital world. The thesis describes information practices of doctoral students in the context of scientific activities through phenomenological interviews and the construction of information horizons. The results show how and why doctoral students use or do not use academic libraries. Readers will learn how doctoral students identify information sources, on basis of which criteria they select information sources and how they filter and evaluate the quality of information. The thesis also examines the concept of scholarly primitives and identifies them in works activities of doctoral students. These practices can be used as a guide for academic libraries in terms of what services they should offer.
