Validation study of the Adaptive Behavior Scale: Social desirability and social disadvantage

Abstract:

Adaptive behavior is a crucial component of intellectual disability assessment. There is not an up to date version of the adaptive behavior scale in the Czech Republic. Therefore, the National Institute for Education is developing such scale. In the thesis, we focus on social desirability and social disadvantage as potential aspects of the validity of the short form of the adaptive behavior scale for parents. The authors aim to create a scale that will be adequate for both majority and minority groups, namely the Roma population. Therefore, persons from socially excluded communities are intentionally included in the study. The study sample consists of 93 parents of the children attending 1st and 2nd grade. The parents were asked to fill the adaptive behavior scale, the social disadvantage scale and the social desirability scale. The social disadvantage of the child was also judged by the teacher. Our data shows that responses on the adaptive behavior scale do not correlate with the social desirability. We detected no correlation between the adaptive behaviour scale and the social disadvantage scale. The social desirability does not correlate with the social disadvantage. Based on these findings we assume that the adaptive behavior scale is not affected by the social desirability and is an adequate assessment method for differently disadvantaged groups.

Abstract:

Adaptívne správanie je dôležitou súčasťou diagnostiky porúch intelektu. V českom prostredí nie je dostupná aktuálna verzia škály adaptívneho správania. Preto Národní ústav pro vzdělávání pracuje na vytvorení takejto škály. V tejto práci sa zameriavame na sociálnu desirabilitu a sociálne znevýhodnenie ako potenciálne aspekty validity skrátenej verzie tejto škály pre rodičov. Zámerom autorov škály je vytvoriť ju tak, aby bola adekvátna voči majoritným aj minoritným skupinám obyvateľstva, predovšetkým rómskej populácii. Vzorkou štúdie sú preto cielene aj osoby zo sociálne vylúčených lokalít. Výskumný súbor tvorí 93 rodičov detí navštevujúcich 1. a 2. ročník základnej školy. Rodičia zodpovedali škálu adaptívneho správania, škálu sociálneho znevýhodnenia a škálu sociálnej desirability. Ku každému dieťaťu sme získali aj posúdenie jeho sociálneho znevýhodnenia od učiteľa. Získané dáta nasvedčujú, že odpovede škály adaptívneho správania nie sú vo vzťahu so sociálnou desirabilitou. Zistili sme tiež, že miera adaptívneho správania nie je vo vzťahu s mierou sociálneho znevýhodnenia. Sociálna desirabilita nie je vo vzťahu s mierou sociálneho znevýhodnenia. Naše zistenia svedčia o tom, že škála adaptívneho správania je nezávislá od sociálnej desirability a je adekvátna pre rôzne znevýhodnené skupiny.
