Perception of Interparental Conflict and Academic Stress of Adolescents

Abstract:

Studie se zaměřuje na zkoumání vztahu mezi rodičovským konfliktem a stresem ve škole, a to jak stresem celkovým, tak jednotlivými kategoriemi stresu (z výkonu/prospěchu, z učitelů a z vrstevnických vztahů). Byly také hledány souvislosti mezi rodičovským konfliktem a studijním prospěchem a oblibou ve třídě. Ve studii byl dále ověřován mediační efekt vztahu k rodičům a moderační efekty zapojení se do rodičovského konfliktu, reprezentace rodiny a strategií zvládání. K analýze byla využita data od 196 studentů a studentek gymnázií ve věku od 15 do 18 let. Studie vychází z kvantitativního designu a k získání potřebných dat byly použity dotazníkové metody: CPIC (The Children’s Perception of Interparental Conflict), SIS (The Security in Interparental System), IPPA (The Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment), ASQ (The Adolescent Stress Questionnaire), CSI (The Coping Strategies Inventory) a sociometrie. Výsledky ukazují, že existuje souvislost mezi konfliktem rodičů a stresem ve škole, ale záleží spíše na subjektivním pocitu ohrožení při rodičovském konfliktu než na vlastnostech konfliktu. S vyšším pocitem ohrožení vyjadřovali respondenti vyšší míru celkového stresu ve škole. U dívek souvisely vlastnosti konfliktu i pocit ohrožení s horším prospěchem. Chlapci zase vyjadřovali s vyšším pocitem ohrožení více stresu z výkonu/prospěchu. Nebyly nalezeny signifikantní souvislosti mezi konfliktem rodičů a oblibou ve třídě, ale ukázalo se, že rodičovský konflikt negativně ovlivňuje subjektivně vnímanou kvalitu vrstevnických vztahů. Nebyl potvrzen mediační efekt vztahu k rodičům, ale byly prokázány moderační efekty zapojení se do rodičovského konfliktu u chlapců, reprezentace rodiny a strategií zvládání u dívek.

Abstract:

This study is focused on examination of the relationship between interparental conflict and school stress, including the total stress and the specific categories of stress too (e.g. stress of performance, teachers and peers). We also tried to find out a connection between interparental conflict and school results and relationships with peers. There were verified the mediation effect of the relationship toward parents in the study and moderation effects of involvement into conflict, representation of family and coping strategies. We gathered data from 196 grammar school students in the age rating between 15 and 18 years. This study used a quantitative research design and we used the questionnaires to obtain wanted data: CPIC (The Children’s Perception of Interparental Conflict), SIS (The Security in Interparental System), IPPA (The Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment), ASQ (The Adolescent Stress Questionnaire), CSI (The Coping Strategies Inventory) and sociometry. There was found the connection between interparental conflict and school stress: but it is needed to add that the subjective feeling of threat is more important compared to other characteristics of conflict. Respondents felt with more threat more school stress too. Characteristics of conflict and feeling of threat was connected with girl’s worse school results. There were no significant associations between interparental conflict and popularity in the class, but it was found that interparental conflict negatively effects subjectively perceived quality of relationships with peers. There was not found the mediation effect of relationship toward parents in the study, but there is the evidence of moderation effects of involvement in boys, representation of family and coping strategies in girls.
