Domination of women over men according to Ian McEwan

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce zkoumá podobné rysy hlavních představitelek děl britského spisovatele Iana McEwana v jeho dílech Betonová zahrada a Pokání. Sleduje jejich mocenské postavení a jejich jistou dominanci nad mužskými hrdiny, jakožto i jejich schopnost manipulace. To vše s ohledem na dobu, ve které byly knihy napsány a také na životní události, jež mohly autora nějakým způsobem při psaní těchto románů ovlivnit. Jedna kapitola byla tak věnována zkoumání postavení žen ve Velké Británii ve 20. století, což mělo pomoci ujasnit, z čeho pramení jejich síla, která byla pro předchozí Viktoriánskou dobu nezvyklá. Pomocí pečlivého čtení obou románů byly identifikovány pasáže v dílech, kde se píše o mocenské převaze hlavních hrdinek, o tom z čeho tato převaha pramení, jakou má podobu a jak na ní zareagovali mužští představitelé. Tyto pasáže pak byly analyzovány a následně porovnány v závěru.

Abstract:

This thesis explores the main female characters’ similarities in novels Cement Garden and Atonement written by a British writer Ian McEwan. It monitors their position of power and certain domination over the male characters, as well as the ability of women to manipulate. All that with regard to the time at which the books were written, and also to life events that could somehow influence the author, while he was writing these books. One chapter is devoted to examining the position of women in Britain in the 20th century, which should help to clarify where their strength comes from. The strength that was previous Victorian times so unusual. Critical reading of both novels has been employed to identify those passages where it is rendered about the domination of the main heroines, about the kinds of displays of the power and how the male characters responded to it. These passages have been analyzed and then compared at the conclusion.
