Bailouts in Russian banking system

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce pojednává o sanaci v Rusku v letech 2014-2020 a o její vlivu na ruský bankovní systém. Práce je rozdělena na část teoretickou, empirickou a případovou studii. V první části práce jsou definována teoretická východiska sanace a její jednotlivé mechanismy. Ve druhé části jsou popsány a vysvětleny důvody a náklady s tím spojené, je analyzováno období před a po sanaci bank a vyhodnocen jejich dopad na ruský bankovní sektor. V poslední části práce důraz je kladen na analýzu a vyhodnocení stavu banky „FC Otkritie” a účinnost aplikovaných k této bance metod. Kromě analýzy bankovního odvětví, cílem této práce je ověřit platnost tří hypotéz. Z ověření platnosti první hypotézy vyplývá, že finanční ozdravení „FC Otkritie“ bylo způsobeno následujícími důvody: nízká averze k riziku, nevčasná tvorba rezerv/opravných položek, odkup ztrátové společnosti „RGS Group“, zahájení sanace banky „Trust“ a další. Na základě testování druhé hypotézy lze konstatovat, že sice banka už v roce 2018 vykazovala zisk, proces sanace se nezastavil a stále bylo nutné vyhodnotit kvalitu úvěrového portfolia a posoudit možné navýšení rezerv. Výsledek ověřování platnosti třetí hypotézy potvrzuje úspěšnost proběhlé sanace: ukazatele rentability se zvýšily, podmínka kapitálové přiměřenosti byla splněna a ke generování zisku již došlo na začátku samotného procesu sanace.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the investigation of bailouts in Russian federation and their impact on the Russian banking system in the years 2014-2020. The thesis is divided into 3 parts: theoretical, empirical, and case study. The first part describes the theoretical basis of bailouts and the way it is applied. The second part describes and explains the reasons and costs associated with it, analyzes the period before and after the bank’s bailout, and evaluates its impact on the Russian banking sector. The financial analysis of the bank "FC Otkritie" and the effectiveness of the methods applied to this bank are evaluated in the last part of the diploma thesis. Besides the analysis of the banking industry, this work aims to test and validate three hypotheses. The validation of the first hypothesis shows that bailout of "FC Otkritie" was caused by the following reasons: low-risk aversion, untimely creation of provisions, acquisition of the loss-making company "RGS Group", the beginning of reorganization of "Trust" bank and others. Based on testing the second hypothesis, I concluded that despite the reported profit in 2018, the reorganization process hasn’t stopped, and it is still necessary to evaluate the quality of the loan portfolio and assess a possible increase in reserves. The third hypothesis confirmed the success of the reorganization: profitability indicators have increased; the capital adequacy requirements have been met and the profit has already been generated at the beginning of the reorganization process itself.
