Czech subtitles of a contemporary English-language audiovisual work - translation with commentary

Abstract:

This Master Thesis deals with the task of creating Czech subtitles for an American audiovisual production. Firstly, it provides theoretical information on the audiovisual translation itself, the process of its creation and further technical data, such as the spatial and temporal constraints that must be followed, how the subtitlers deal with the change of the mode from spoken to written. Further theoretical data is provided on Christiane Nord' translation-oriented analytical model, according to which an analysis of the source text is carried out prior to the translation itself. Primarily, the analysis aids to reveal implications of the source text to the source culture, which can account for further problematic translation units. Furthermore, the skopos of the translation is specified, which determines the purpose of the translation thus helping to shape the overall direction of the translation. The subsequent translation of the subtitles is then created using the data acquired in the analysis and following the specified skopos of the translation. In the conclusion of the practical part, the translation solutions of particular translation units - especially those that arise from the differences between the source and target cultures - are explained, along with explanations of how the chosen translation solution complies with the skopos of the translation. The source text used for the analysis and the finished subtitles are presented in Appendix.

Diplomová práce se zabývá tvorbou českých titulků k americké audiovizuální práci. Práce nejdříve teoreticky popisuje process tvorby audiovizuálního překladu a jeho další technické parametry, například prostorová a časová omezení, která se musí dodržet, nebo jak se překladatalé titulků vypořádávají se změnou mluveného jazyka na psaný. Dále práce teoreticky popisuje analytický model Christiane Nord zaměřený na překlad, podle kterého je výchozí text před samotným překladem analyzován. Tato analýza pomáha odhalit implikace výchozího textu k výchozí kultuře, které mohou následně vytvořit problematické překladatelské jednotky. Dále je v práci určen skopos samotného překladu, který stanovuje jeho cíl a tím pomáhá udržovat směr, kterým se daný překlad ubírá. Data získaná v analýze a určený skopos překladu jsou následně využity při samotném překladu titulků. V závěru praktické části práce obsahuje vysvětlení konkrétních problematických překladových jednotek, zejména těch, které vznikly z rozdílů mezi výchozí a cílovou kulturou. Dále je u každé překladové jednotky odůvodněn zvolený překlad a je vysvětleno, jak se tato volba shoduje se skoposem. Výchozí text použitý pro analýzu a zhotovené titulky jsou k nalezení v Appendixu této práce.
