Orientalisms in novel Death and the Dervish by Meša Selimović and their reflection in Czech and Polish translation

Abstract:

In this thesis we were oriented on the presence of orientalisms in the novel Dervish and the death by Meša Selimović and the problem of their translation into Czech and Polish language. We tried to explain the history and influence of the Slavic-Turkic language contacts on culture and life, as Serbo-Croatian language region, so and the Czech and Polish, in order to understand the representation and the need to use orientalisms in these three Slavic languages. The thesis includes a historical overview and the process of taking foreign vocabularies due to the need or for fashion. We explained orientalisms from cultural, historical and linguistics point of view. The same can be differently classified and viewed from the different perspectives for their different understanding. Orientalisms, which are in the Serbo-Croatian language mostly taken and most commonly used during the conquest of the Balkans by the Ottoman Turks, they had to pass through various adaptations before they became part of this language. The problem of words adaptation from the Turkish language occurs manly there, where for certain phonemes, there was no corresponding equivalent in Serbocroatian language. In this thesis we explained the process of adapting foreign words to the domestic vocabulary from the phonological and morphological point of view. The aim of this thesis is to show on examples, which terms of oriental origin Czech and Polish translators kept or which they decided to replace with appropriate domestic equivalent. We wanted to explain the problem of translating the novel, which includes life in an oriental environment and it is rich of vocabulary of oriental origin. We noticed that culture is partially untranslatable, but that by reading this book in Czech or Polish language, we can encounter more that 50% or orientalisms, which are used in original novel. With the practical analysis of the novel, we noted a total of 529 orientalisms and divided them into groups according to part of speech, a special group consists of phrases in the novel. We noticed that the vocabulary of oriental origin in the novel was included naturally, with the aim to bring closer the influence of oriental on the culture of the Balkans. We can say with certainty that the translators of the novel also managed the same, with deciding to keep orientalisms in places where it is most needed for understanding the plot and chronotope. The results of our study show that the translation of loanwords or borrowed words is sometimes complex work, as is the understanding of unknown, in this case the oriental in the Czech and polish environment, where contacts with the oriental nations were not as long and strong as at the Balkans. We hope that our thesis will help future translation not only of literary works of Serbo-Croatian region but also problematic loanwords or borrowed words, such as exactly orientalisms.

Abstract:

V tejto práci sme sa zamerali na výskyt orientalizmov v románe Derviš i smrt Meši Selimovića a problematiku ich prekladu do českého a poľského jazyka. Snažili sme sa vysvetliť dejiny a vplyv slovansko-turkických jazykových kontaktov na kultúru a život, ako srbochorvátskeho prostredia, tak aj českého a poľského, aby sme mohli pochopiť výskyt a potrebu použitia orientalizmov v týchto troch slovanských jazykoch. Práca zachytáva historické pozadie a proces preberania cudzej lexiky z dôvodu potreby alebo kvôli móde. Vysvetlili sme orientalizmy z kulturologického, historického a lingvistického hľadiska. Isté môžeme rôzne klasifikovať a pozerať sa na nich z rôznych hľadísk pre lepšie porozumenie. Orientalizmy, ktoré boli do srbochorvátskeho jazyka najviac preberané a najčastejšie používané počas obsadenia Balkánu osmanskými Turkami, museli prejsť rôznymi adaptáciami, predtým ako sa stáli súčasťou tohto jazyka. Problém adaptácie slov z jazyka tureckého sa vyskytoval najmä tam, kde pre určité fonémy neexistoval vhodný ekvivalent v srbochorvátčine. V práci sme ujasnili proces prispôsobovania cudzích slov domácej lexiky z fonologického a morfologického hľadiska. Cieľom tejto práce je ukázať na príkladoch, ktoré termíny orientálneho pôvodu český a poľský prekladateľ zachovali, alebo pre ktoré sa rozhodli použiť vhodný domáci ekvivalent. Chceli sme vysvetliť problematiku prekladania románu, ktorý zachytáva život v orientálnom prostredí a je bohatý lexikou orientálneho pôvodu. Všimli sme si, že kultúra je čiastočne nepreložiteľná, ale že sa čítaním tejto knihy v češtine alebo poľštine stretneme s viac než 50% orientalizmov, ktoré boli použité v origináli románu. Praktickou analýzou románu sme zaznamenali celkom 526 lexikálnych jednotiek orientálneho pôvodu a rozdelili ich do skupín podľa slovného druhu, zvláštnu skupinu tvoria frazémy v románe. Všimli sme si, že lexika orientálneho pôvodu bola do románu začlenená prirodzene s cieľom priblíženia vplyvu orientálneho na kultúru Balkánu. Môžeme s istotou povedať, že sa isté podarilo aj prekladateľom románu, ktorí sa rozhodli zachovať orientalizmy na miestach, kde pre pochopenie deja a chronotopu to bolo najpotrebnejšie. Výsledky našej práce ukazujú, že je prekladanie lexikálnych výpožičiek niekedy zložitou prácou, tak ako je aj pochopenie neznámeho, v tomto prípade orientálneho, v českom a poľskom prostredí, kde kontakty s orientálnymi národmi neboli tak dlhé alebo silné ako na Balkáne. Dúfame, že naša práca pomôže budúcom prekladaní nielen literaterárnych prác srbochorvátskeho prostredia ale aj problematických lexikálnych výpožičiek, aké sú práve orientalizmy.
