Rationalisation and the meat paradox

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá paradoxem masa a jeho racionalizací, která byla měřena pomocí dotazníku 4N. Podstatou paradoxu masa je, že většina lidí jí maso a zároveň tvrdí, že milují zvířata a jsou proti ubližování zvířat. Je tedy důsledkem ambivalentních postojů v kontextu konzumace masa. Čtyři nejčastější justifikace (tzv. 4N), které lidé zastávají, tvrdí, že je konzumace masa nezbytná, přirozená, normální a chutná. Výzkumu se zúčastnilo 279 vysokoškolských studentů ve věku 19–45 let (M = 23.36; SD = 4.00), z nichž bylo 227 žen (81.4 %) a 52 mužů (18.6 %). Respondenti byli náhodně přiřazeni do jedné ze dvou experimentálních podmínek. V první části práce jsem se pomocí vyvolaných emocí (empatie vůči zvířeti, znechucení a úzkost z konzumace masa) pokusila snížit ochotu konzumovat maso, zvýšit pravděpodobnost volby vegetariánské alternativy a snížit míru souhlasu s položkami dotazníku 4N, které reprezentují výše zmíněné justifikace. V druhé části jsem se stejné proměnné snažila ovlivnit zneplatněním nezbytnosti konzumace masa (nejsilnější N) pomocí podložených informací o vegetariánské stravě. V neposlední řadě byly zkoumány rozdíly mezi muži a ženami. Mezi experimentálními skupinami a jejich kontrolními skupinami nebyly zjištěny žádné signifikantní rozdíly v žádné ze tří hlavních sledovaných proměnných (ochota konzumovat maso, pravděpodobnost volby vegetariánské alternativy a míra souhlasu s položkami dotazníku 4N). Významný rozdíl mezi muži a ženami, kteří konzumují maso, byl zjištěný pouze v proměnné měřící ochotu konzumovat maso. O možných vysvětlených a limitech se zmiňuji v diskusi.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the meat paradox and its rationalisation, which was measured using the 4N questionnaire. The essence of the meat paradox is that most people eat meat while claiming to love animals and oppose animal cruelty. The meat paradox is therefore the result of ambivalent attitudes in the context of meat consumption. The four most common justifications (so called 4Ns) that people hold are that eating meat is necessary, natural, normal and nice. Participants were 279 university students aged 19–45 years (M = 23.36; SD = 4.00), of whom 227 were female (81.4 %) and 52 were male (18.6 %). They were randomly assigned to one of two experimental conditions. In the first part of the thesis, I used evoked emotions (empathy towards an animal, disgust for meat and distress about meat consumption) to try to reduce the willingness to consume meat, increase the likelihood of choosing a vegetarian alternative meal, and reduce the level of agreement with the 4N questionnaire items that represent the aforementioned justifications. In the second part, I attempted to influence the same variables by invalidating the necessity of meat consumption (strongest N) using substantiated information about vegetarian diet. Last but not least, differences between men and women were examined. No significant differences were found between the experimental groups and their controls on any of the three main variables of interest (willingness to consume meat, likelihood of choosing a vegetarian alternative, and level of agreement with the 4N questionnaire items). A significant difference between men and women who consume meat was found only in the variable measuring willingness to consume meat. I discuss possible explanations and limitations in the discussion.
