Relations of Napoleonic France and Qajar Iran

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo zanalyzovat francouzsko-íránské vztahy během napoleonského období a vlády qádžárovské dynastie. Po představení historie francouzsko-íránských vztahů před nástupem Qádžárovců byly následně diskutovány vztahy po roce 1795. V roce 1796 se do Íránu vydala francouzská diplomatická mise vedená vědci Bruguierem and Olivierem, která z hlediska diplomacie nebyla tak úspěšná, ale byly učiněny vědecké poznatky v přírodních a humanitních oborech. Když se Napoleon v roce 1799 oficiálně ujal ve Francii moci, došlo k rozvoji vztahů s Íránem v rámci geopolitického soupeření s Velkou Británií. Íránský šáh Fath ´Alí uzavřel politickou a obchodní smlouvu s Velkou Británií v roce 1801, ale Britové z důvodu rusko-britského spojenectví v Evropě proti Napoleonovi nebyli následně ochotni podpořit Írán v boji proti Rusku, které jej ohrožovalo na Kavkaze. Fath ´Alí Šáh se rozhodl nastartovat francouzsko-íránské sbližování. Za pomoci diplomatických misí Romieua a Jauberta mezi lety 1805 a 1807 to vyústilo v podepsání Finkensteinské smlouvy v roce 1807. Nicméně Tylžský mnír, uzavřený následně mezi Napoleonem a carem Alexandrem, úplně změnil situaci. Mezitím se generál Gardane vydal na další misi do Íránu s cílem plnit závazky z Finkensteinské dohody, ale pokyny se změnily a Gardane se měl pokusit přesvědčit Rusko a Írán k uzavření míru. V každém případě se zájmy Francie a Íránu rozcházely a v roce 1809 se Gardane rozhodl ukončit svou misi a vrátit se do Francie. Britští diplomaté využili situace a obnovili politickou smlouvu, která zahrnovala ochranu Íránu proti agresi kterékoli jiné evropské mocnosti. Nakonec se situace znovu změnila v roce 1810, britští spojenci nechali Írán opět na holičkách a ten byl v roce 1813 poražen Ruskem. Podle následně uzavřené Golestánské smlouvy Írán ztratil řadu kavkazských chanátů. Francouzsko-íránské vztahy byly po pádu Napoleonova císařství na delší dobu utlumeny. Boj o vliv v Íránu v rámci "Velké hry" zůstal v režii pouze dvou mocností Velké Británie a Ruska až do začátku 20. století.

Abstract:

The objective of this study was to analyse Franco-Iranian relations during the Napoleonic era and reign of the Qajar dynasty. After introduction of the history of Franco-Iranian relations before the rise of the Qajar dynasty the relations after 1795 were discussed. In 1796, French diplomatic mission led by scientists Bruguiere and Olivier set out for Iran, which was not so successful in diplomatic point of view, but the scientical discoveries in natural and human fields were made. After 1799, when the Napoleon officialy took power in France, there was a development of relations with Iran because of struggle with Britain in geopolitical targets. Iranian shah Fath´Ali concluded a political and commercial contract with Great Britain in 1801, but the British were not willing to support Iran against Russia, which threatened Iran in the Caucasus, caused by Russian-British partnership against Napoleon in Europe. The Fath ´Ali Shah decided to start with Franco-Iranian rapprochement. After help of diplomatic missions of Romieu and Jaubert between 1805 and 1807 it resulted in the signing of Finkenstein Treaty in 1807. However, Treaty of Tilsit between Napoleon and tsar Alexander completely changed the situation. In the meantime general Gardane went to Iran for another mission with the target to fullfil the commitments of Finkenstein Treaty, but instructions were changed and Gardane was to try to convince Russia and Iran to make peace. In any case, the interests of France and Iran diverged and in 1809 Gardane decided to finish his mission and came back to France. British diplomats took advantage of the situation and renewed a political alliance which concluded a protection of Iran from aggression of other European country. Finally, the situation changed again in 1810 and British allies let Iran down again and Iran was defeated by Russians in 1813. According to the upcoming Treaty of Golestan Iran lost many of Caucasian khanates. Nevertheless, Franco-Iranian diplomatic relations after fall of the Napoleonic Empire for long time were reduced and only Britain and Russia struggled to gain influence in Iran within "Great Game" until the beginning of the 20th century.
