Stylistic norms relating to structure of scholarly texts (an analysis based on selected B.A. and M.A. thesis)

Abstract:

Předkládaná magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá žánrem diplomové práce, který lze mimo jiné zařadit také k odbornému funkčnímu stylu. Předmětem této práce je pokusit se analyzovat konkrétní jednotky vybraného materiálu, a to z hlediska jejich kompozice, a zjistit, do jaké míry autoři diplomových prací dodržují kritéria kladená na výstavbu těchto specifických komunikátů. V první fázi výzkumu jsme se zaměřili na formální zpracování vybraných údajů, stěžejní jsou však rozbory klíčových segmentů prací (název, abstrakt, úvod, závěr), kdy byl náš zájem soustředěn především na míru informační nasycenosti těchto částí a také na jejich vzájemnou propojenost. Zjistili jsme, že převážná většina diplomantů Ústavu českého jazyka Filozofické fakulty Masarykovy univerzity požadavky vyplývající z povahy tohoto specifického žánru a nastavené ze strany fakulty při zpracovávání svých diplomových prací dodržuje. Pouze v devíti případech prací bakalářských a desíti případech prací magisterských jsme shledali závažnější odchylky od běžného úzu výstavby těchto komunikátů, což lze do jisté míry považovat za výsledek přímo úměrný celkovému počtu sto tří analyzovaných jednotek.

Abstract:

The presented M. A. thesis deals with genre of thesis which inter alia may be also included into academic style. The subject of this thesis is to try to analyse the specific units of selected material in viewpoint of their structure and find out the extent to which writers of theses meet the criteria required for the construction of these specific texts. In the first part of the research we focused on the formal processing of selected data. However, fundamental is analysis of crucial segments of theses (Title, Abstract, Introduction, Conclusions), where our interest was focused mainly on the level of information saturation of these parts and also their interconnectedness. We found that the vast majority of students Department of Czech Language Faculty of Arts Masaryk University, when they had written their theses, respected requirements arising from the character of this specific genre and requirements set by the faculty. Only in nine cases of B. A. theses and ten cases of M. A. theses we found serious deviations from normal usage the construction of these works, which can be to some extent considered as the result directly proportional to the total number of one hundred three analysed units.
