Marriage as an institution of the Western society

Abstract:

Tato práce je zaměřená na vývoj instituce manželství v Evropě, zejména od 19. století po současnost, s přihlédnutím k dřívějšímu vývoji. Vedle pojmů týkající se manželství a rodiny, jsou nastíněny základní charakteristiky manželství ve starověku, středověku a raném novověku. Poté se rozebírá vývoj a proměny manželství v 19. století s důrazem na ekonomické změny a sekularizaci společnosti, což vedlo k rozšíření autonomie jedince a k postupné individualizaci. To se odráželo například při výběru partnera a vedlo to k postupné emancipaci žen. Fenomén lásky, jakožto nový předpoklad pro vstup do manželství je probírán v další kapitole. Dalším tématem jsou změny manželského života ve 20. století s přihlédnutím na tehdejší politickou a ekonomickou situaci a na některé výrazné události, jmenovitě na první a druhou světovou válku, sexuální revoluci a nástup a pád komunistických režimů, až po podobu dnešního manželství a rodiny. Dalšími dílčími tématy jsou genderové role, jejich proměny v čase a vývoj právní úpravy v rodinné problematice. Poslední část je zaměřena na empirický výzkum, jehož hlavím cílem bylo srovnání tradičních charakteristik připisovaných manželství (jako je reprodukce, monopol na sex, trvalost nebo láska) s názory a postoji dnešních vysokoškoláků.

Abstract:

This essay focuses on development of institution of marriage in Europe especially from 19th century to present, with regard to the earlier progression. Beside the conceptions relating to marriage and family there are outlined the basic characteristics of marriage in ancient world, in the Middle Ages and in the early modern period. Then follow the analysis of development and transformations of marriage in 19th century with emphasis on economic changes and secularization of society, which led to extension of individual?s autonomy and to gradual individualization. This was reflected for example in selection of mate and it led to gradual emancipation of women. The phenomena of love as a new presumption for entering the marriage is described in the next chapter. Next theme are changes of marital live in 20th century with regard to political and economic situation and to some major events, namely the First and Second World War, the sexual revolution and the coming and fall of communistic regimes, up to the present form of marriage and family. Other component themes are gender roles, their transformations over time and the development of family law. The empirical part is based on a research, which general purpose was to compare traditional characteristics imputed to marriage (such as reproduction, a monopoly on sex, durability or love) with opinions and attitudes of today's students of university.
