Psychological aspects of "illness behavior" in oncology patients

Abstract:

The diploma thesis considers the period of time between the discovery of symptoms of breast cancer and the final diagnosis in women, who discovered the symptoms by themselves. It researches the aspects of illness behavior, what means a reaction to the possibility of illness by using the qualitative method IPA (interpretative phenomenological analysis) and looks for the key topics which are important for these women. It sheds light on the time of insecurity and awaiting for the diagnosis from the point of view of women, who have this experience. It tries to find a way how to understand them and encourage them. The thesis found out that besides the emotions there is a rational approach as well. An important topic is communication with relatives about the symptoms and an effort to find a reason why the symptoms have appeared.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca sa zameriava na obdobie od objavenia príznakov rakoviny prsníka po stanovenie diagnózy lekárom u žien, ktoré si symptómy objavili samé. Skúma špecifiká illness behavior, teda reakciu na možnosť ochorenia, u týchto žien pomocou kvalitatívnej metódy IPA (interpretatívna fenomenologická analýza) a teda hľadá kľúčové témy, ktoré sú pre ženy v tomto období dôležité. Odhaľuje tak obdobie neistoty a čakania na diagnózu z pohľadu žien, ktoré si týmto zážitkom prešli a tým sa snaží nájsť spôsob, ako ženy v tejto situácii pochopiť a podporiť. Práca zistila, že okrem emočného prežívania tejto situácie sa v tomto období objavuje aj racionálny postoj k nej. Ako dôležitú tému tiež odhalila problematiku komunikácie s blízkymi o tom, čo sa deje a tiež snahu zdôvodniť si, prečo sa vlastne príznaky objavili.
