Perception of Czechs by inhabitants of neighbouring countries

Abstract:

Hlavním tématem této práce je měnící se sociální identita ve střední Evropě. Cílem práce je popsat, jak obyvatelé středoevropských států definují svoji identitu. Jaká identita je pro ně nejdůležitější? Jak hrdí jsou středoevropané na svoji zemi? Dochází skutečně k oslabování národní identity? Téma je zkoumáno v těchto pěti zemích: Česká republika, Německo, Polsko, Rakousko, Slovensko. Vzhledem k odlišným způsobům formování národní identity v těchto zemích předpokládám mezi nimi zajímavé rozdíly i podobnosti. Výzkum je založen na sekundární analýze dat mezinárodního výzkumu ISSP National Identity II z roku 2003. V rámci tohoto výzkumu byly stanoveny čtyři dimenze národní identity, kterými jsou: teritoriální identita, kolektivní identita, národní hrdost a etnocentrismus. V těchto dimenzích jsem pak formulovala své hypotézy. Výsledky analýzy byly porovnány s teorií Stuarta Halla zaměřující se na dopady globalizace na kulturní identitu. Podle výsledků analýzy můžeme říci, že středoevropané upřednostňují spíše malé sociální skupiny a mají tendenci k individualismu. Svoji teritoriální identitu si spojují ponejvíce s místem, ve kterém žijí a se státem. Mezi středoevropany s nejsilněji vyjadřovanou národní identitou patří Rakušané. Globalistické tendence v našem výzkumu nalezeny nebyly.

Abstract:

The central theme of this paper is changing social identity in central European area. The main aim is to describe how people living in the central Europe define their identity. Which identity is the most important for them? How proud are they of their country? Is it true that importance of national identity is declining? These topics are examinig in following five countries: Austria, Czech republic, Germany, Poland and Slovak republic. Due to specific condition of forming national identity I assume interesting contrasts and similarities in each country. Research presented in this paper is based on secondary analysis of International Social Survey Programm 2003 National Identity II. National identity is according to this research analyzed in these following dimensions: territorial identity, collective identity, national pride and etnocentrism. Nine hypothesis were defined and tested following these dimensions. My findings were compared with the theory of Stuart Hall about impacts globalization processes on cultural identity. According to this analysis we can say that people living in the central European area tend to individualism and small communities. The most important place for them is area where they live, but the national identity is very important as well. People with the strongest articulated national identity in each dimension were Austrians. Tendencies to globalism were not find.
