The Chinese Balance of Payments and Its Context

Abstract:

Diplomová práce představuje vývoj běžného účtu platební bilance Číny v letech 1998–2017, zejména však diskutuje potenciální příčiny, které vedly k poklesu původně výrazného přebytku na čínském běžném účtu platební bilance ve druhé polovině sledovaného období. První část práce je teoretickým východiskem a zabývá se principy sestavování a účty platební bilance, přibližuje vnější ekonomickou rovnováhu a vyrovnávací procesy platební bilance. Druhá kapitola poskytuje informace o specifikách Číny – měnovém kurzu, investičním prostředí, střední třídě a přístupu k úsporám. Třetí část práce je věnována vývoji běžného účtu a dalších součástí čínské platební bilance ve sledovaném období a představuje též vývoj souvisejících ukazatelů. Poslední kapitola se zabývá vlastním hledáním možných příčin, které vedly k poklesu přebytku čínského běžného účtu.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis presents the development of the current account of the balance of payments in China between the years 1998 and 2017. However, it primarily discusses the potential causes that may have led to the decline of the previously significant current account surplus in China in the second half of the observed period. The first chapter of the thesis provides theoretical background, addresses the components and principles of the balance of payments and focuses on external economic balance and balance of payments adjustment mechanisms. The second part of the thesis provides information regarding selected factors specific to China – its exchange rate, investment environment, middle class development and approach to savings. The third chapter is concerned with the development of the Chinese current account and other components of the balance of payments in the observed period. It also presents related indicators. The last part of the thesis addresses potential causes of the decline of the Chinese current account surplus.
