Membership in pro-ana community in the context of mental anorexia

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá problematikou mentální anorexie na pro-ana blozích u adolescentních dívek na území České republiky. Prostřednictvím spřátelených blogů se pro-ana blogy propojují do online komunity. Práce se zaměřuje zejména na vliv členství v pro-ana komunitě, na průběh, léčbu, případně recidivu onemocnění, dále na kvalitu života respondentek a formování jejich identity. Důraz byl kladen rovněž na přijímání diagnózy mentální anorexie blogerkami. Teoretická část předkládá dostupné, převážně zahraniční studie zabývající se pro-ana problematikou. Autorka se zabývá rovněž tématy mentální anorexie a blogování, jakožto oblastmi, které s hlavním tématem úzce souvisejí. Poznatky výzkumů shrnuje, propojuje a překládá teoretická východiska pro empirickou část práce. Výzkum byl zpracován kvalitativní metodou zakotvené teorie na vzorku dvanácti respondentek ve věku 16 – 20 let. Jedním z hlavních zjištění bylo, že pro-ana identita nabývá u dívek různého významu. Zatímco jedna skupina členek komunity ji interpretuje jako svou vlastní životní volbu, skupina druhá jako nemoc - mentální anorexii. Prožívání a chování obou skupin však vykazuje některé podobné znaky. Byl zjištěn vliv pro-ana blogu na proces rozhodování o léčbě. Hlavními důvody pro setrvávání v komunitě jsou obavy ze ztrát benefitů, které dívkám poskytuje. Těmi jsou zejména pochopení a podpora, pocit bezpečí a tvorba blízkých přátelských vztahů. Výsledky výzkumu rovněž poukázaly na šíření komunity za hranice blogů prostřednictvím sociálních sítí.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the phenomenon of anorexia nervosa at the pro-ana blogs among adolescent girls in the Czech republic. Pro-ana blogs are interconnected into a wide online communities. The exploration is focused on the influence of the pro-ana community membership on the course and the relapse of the disease, on the quality of respondents´ lifes and their identity creation. The acceptance of anorexia as the illness by the bloggers is also emphasised. The theoretical part of the text brings forward studies concerning the pro-ana phenomenon. The author deals also with anorexia nervosa and blogging issues in general as they both are closely connected with the main theme. The results and findings of studies are summarized and interconnected to make the theoretical framework for the part of the research. Based on the grounded theory, the analytical part of the text works with the sample of twelve respondents at the age ranging from 16 to 20. One of the key findings shows that the interpretation of the pro-ana identity is not the same throughout the community. Whereas some of respondents describe being pro-ana as their own life choice or as a lifestyle, the others are accepting their illness, anorexia nerovsa. But experiences and behaviour of both those subgroups show some similar features. Another finding shows the influence of pro-ana community on the process of deciding about the treatment. Fears of loosing the benefits provided by the community seem to be the main reason for staying. In particular, girls value the sense of security, the social support, and also their friendly relationships. There is also an evidence that the community tends to spread beyond its borders to the social network sites.
