Invoking ghosts. Literary field and "world literature" in the contemporary Argentine novel, two case studies (Gabriela Cabezón Cámara's gaucho and Mariana Enriquez's terror)

Abstract:

This thesis analyses two Argentinean novels, Nuestra parte de noche by Mariana Enriquez and Las aventuras de la China Iron by Gabriela Cabezón Cámara (the former author forming the core of the work). Our analysis, based on Bourdieu's theory of fields, reflects on the process of the "globalisation" of these novels. The thesis contrasts the frameworks of reception of the texts with their internal logic and points out the possible ways in which peripheral literatures enter "world literature", that is, in the form of exotic products extracted from their particular historical conditions of creation and subjected to the values of the centres. The study suggests that in the "globalisation" of literary works, the consecration by the market and journalistic criticism intersects with that of university criticism, two opposing poles in the literary field, which - as we argue - increasingly influence each other.

Disertační práce se zabývá analýzou dvou argentinských románů, Nuestra parte de noche Mariany Enriquezové a Las aventuras de la China Iron Gabriely Cabezón Cámarové (první jmenovaná autorka a její dílo tvoří gro práce). Naše analýza, opírající se o teorii polí, sleduje proces „globalizace“ neboli internacionalizace těchto románů. Práce konfrontuje rámce recepce textů s jejich vnitřní logikou a poukazuje na možné způsoby, jakými periferní literatury vstupují do "světové literatury", tedy v podobě exotických produktů vyňatých z konkrétních historických podmínek svého vzniku a podřízených hodnotám center. Studie naznačuje, že v procesu internacionalizace literárních děl se protíná posvěcení trhem a žurnalistickou kritikou s posvěcením akademickou kritikou, které konstituují dva protipóly v rámci dynamiky literárního pole – protipóly, které se, jak tvrdíme, stále více vzájemně ovlivňují.
