Communicating science to students: exploring the modes in videos and their potential for CLIL

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is the multimodal analysis of educational videos and their use in teaching using the CLIL method. This thesis is divided into theoretical, analytical, and didactic parts. The theoretical part introduces the history, methodology, and advantages and disadvantages of the CLIL method. This thesis approaches the topic of educational videos in a learning environment and their role in improving language skills. The thesis also describes multimodality, the use of different means of communication, and their synergy in language teaching. The analytical part then focuses on the multimodal discourse analysis of the popular science videos in terms of four semiotic modes. The didactic part of this thesis then deals with the actual use of videos in classes taught by the CLIL method, examining their effectiveness and benefit not only for students but also for teachers in the field of foreign language teaching.

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je multimodální analýza populárně naučných videí a jejich využití ve výuce za pomocí metody CLIL. Tato práce je rozdělena na teoretickou, analytickou a didaktickou část. Teoretickí část představuje historii, metodologii a zhodnocení výhod a nevýhod vyučovací metody CLIL. Déle tato práce přibližuje téma populárně naučných videé v edukačním prostředí a jejich roli ve zlepšení jazykových dovedností. Práce také popisuje multimodalitu a využití různých komunikačních prostředků a jejich synergii při výuce jazyka. Analytická část se pak věnuje samotné multimodální analýze diskurzu deseti populárně naučných videí z hlediska čtyř semitockých módů. Didaktická část této práce se pak zabývá konkrétním uplatněním videí v hodinách vyučovaných metodou CLIL, zkoumá jejich efektivitu a přínos nejen pro studenty, ale i pedagogy v oblasti výuky cizích jazyků.
