Abstract:

Tato práce je srovnávací studií anglických a českých idiomů, které obsahují výrazy označující úseky času. Zkoumá typické vlastnosti idiomů a shodu mezi anglickými a českými idiomy z hlediska významového, výrazového a mluvnického. Práce si klade za cíl doložit, zda většina idiomů, které obsahují časový výraz v jedné řeči, obsahuje časový výraz i v řeči druhé. Takovéto idiomy, které se shodují významově v obou jazycích, se ale výrazně liší od svých protějšků z hlediska výrazového nebo mluvnického. V první části práce je vysvětleno, co je idiom a jaké jsou jeho typické vlastnosti. Byly porovnány odlišné definice výrazu idiom z různých zdrojů a následně byla odvozena definice, která zahrnuje všechny idiomy, které jsou rozebírány v této práci. Dále byly porovnány dvě metody výuky idiomů v cizím jazyce a jako vhodný způsob výuky idiomů byla navržena kombinace těchto metod. Druhou částí této práce je rozbor sesbíraných idiomů. Nejdříve jsou stanoveny časové výrazy, které rozebírané idiomy osahují. Poté je vysvětlena metoda sestavování korpusu idiomů a metoda jejich rozebírání, která je založena na metodě zavedené Janou Vokáčovou v její disertační práci. Dvojice idiomů, jež si odpovídají v obou jazycích, jsou rozděleny do kategorií podle stupně jejich vzájemné shody. Hlavními kategoriemi jsou naprostá shoda, částečná shoda a žádná shoda. Tyto kategorie jsou dále rozděleny do podkategorií, jak je popsáno v příslušné části této práce. Výše zmíněný předpoklad byl prokázán, neboť nejobsáhlejší kategorií je částečná shoda, která zahrnuje idiomy, jež v obou jazycích obsahují časový výraz, ale výrazně se od svých protějšků liší na úrovni výrazové nebo mluvnické. Počty idiomů patřících do každé kategorie a podkategorie jsou seřazeny v tabulkách na konci druhé části této práce.

Abstract:

This thesis is a comparative study of English and Czech idioms which contain time expressions. It investigates typical features of idioms and the correspondence between English and Czech idioms from the semantic, lexical and grammatical point of view. The hypothesis to be proved is that most of the idioms which contain a time expression in one language contain a time expression in the other language as well. These idioms, which correspond semantically in the two languages, however, differ significantly from their counterparts from the lexical or grammatical point of view. The first part of the thesis explains what an idiom is and what its typical features are. Different definitions of the term idiom from various sources were compared and a definition which encompasses all the idioms analysed in this thesis was derived. Furthermore, two different methods of teaching idioms in a foreign language were compared and a combination of these was suggested as a preferable way of teaching idioms. The second part of the thesis is an analysis of the collected idioms. First, it sets down the time expressions which the analysed idioms contain. Second, it explains the method of the compilation of the corpus of idioms and the method of analysis, which is based on the method established by Jana Vokáčová (Vokáčová, 2008). The pairs of idioms corresponding in the two languages are divided into categories according to the degree of their mutual correspondence. The main categories are Total Correspondence, Partial Correspondence and Non Correspondence. These categories are further divided into subcategories, as is described in the relevant part of the thesis. The hypothesis was proved to be right, because the largest category is Partial Correspondence, which contains idioms with time expressions in both languages, which however differ significantly on either lexical or grammatical level from their counterparts. The numbers of idioms pertaining to each category and subcategory are organized in tables at the end of the second part of the thesis.
