Preparation of Mo2BC type thin films by pulsed magnetron sputtering and their analysis

Abstract:

This work concentrates on the preparation and diagnosis of Mo2BC thin films prepared by simultaneous magnetron sputtering from three targets. Pusled DC plasma was used, which increased the number of ions impacting on the substrate. That reduced the temperature required for the formation of crystalline coatings. In this work, the optimal deposition conditions with focus on the ion flux to the substrate and the stability of the process are sought. Under these conditions, we examine the effect of bias voltage and the heating of the substrate on the composition and properties of the coatings. Using X-ray diffraction, we examine the crystalline structure of prepared thin films. EDX was used to determine the influence of the bias on the chemical composition. The differences between the structure of the surface structure of a crystalline and an amorphous coating are examined by scanning electron microscopy. We also examine the effect of increased temperature and applied bias on the mechanical properties of the coatings. After finding the optimal deposition conditions, we have managed to prepare a crystalline Mo2BC coating at 550°C, but also, more importantly, without heating the substrate using only applied bias, which was the ultimate goal of this work. The coatings have slightly worse mechanical properties than those reported in literature. These differences are caused by incorrect stoichiometry of the coatings, which was difficult to determine.

Abstract:

Táto práca sa zaoberá prípravou a diagnostikou Mo2BC vrstiev, pripravených magnetrónovým naprašovaním z troch terčov. Bola použitá plazma budená pulzmi, ktorá zvyšovala počet iónov dopadajúcich na substrát, čím sa znížila teplota potrebná na tvorbu kryštalických vrstiev. V práci sa hľadajú optimálne podmienky na depozíciu vzhľadom k maximalizácii toku iónov na substrát a stabilitu procesu. Pri týchto podmienkach sa skúma vplyv predpätia a vyhrievania substrátu na zloženie a vlastnosti vrstiev. Pomocou röntgenovej difrakcie sa skúma kryštálová štruktúra pripravených vrstiev. Metódou EDX sa určuje vplyv predpätia na chemické zloženie. Rozdiely medzi štruktúrou povrchu kryštalických a amorfných vrstiev sa~skúmajú elektrónovým rastrovacím mikroskopom. Taktiež sa skúma vplyv zvýšenej teploty a použitého predpätia na mechanické vlastnosti vrstiev. Po nájdení optimálnych depozičných podmienok sa nám podarilo vytvoriť kryštalické Mo2BC vrstvy pri teplote 550°C, ale aj bez vyhrievania substrátu len s využitím predpätia, čo bolo konečným cieľom tejto práce. Vrstvy vykazujú o niečo horšie mechanické vlastnosti ako udáva literatúra. Tieto nedostatky sú spôsobené nesprávnou stechiometriou vrstvy, ktorej určenie bolo problematické.
