Linguistic demonstration of trust-building potential. An exemplary analysis of texts produced by the Brücke/Most-Foundation

Abstract:

Trust is one of the most important principles of functioning of interpersonal relationships and the society. It is evident that trust is related to language and communication very closely. Despite this close relationship, linguistics has not taken any active part in this topical research so far. The dissertation suggests that linguistic pragmatics has the necessary methods available for searching for and answering key questions about the issue of trust. Moreover, it presents a novel methodological approach capable of linguistic operationalisation of the trust-building process. The dissertation is dealing with the process of building and maintaining trust by means of language. Trust-building communicative processes are understood as specific sort of communicative acting leading to construction and maintenance of a positive image of trustworthiness. The operationalisation of this process represents the hypothesis of the dissertation. The theoretical model of trust-building mechanisms was subsequent applied in an empirical exemplary analysis of texts produced by a German NGO working on the field of German-Czech relations. By using the method of pragmatic style analysis, the main means used by the organization to communicate and stage its trustworthiness were described. These means make up the “trust-building potential” of the analyzed texts.

Abstract:

Důvěra je jedním z nejdůležitějších principů fungování mezilidských vztahů a společnosti jako celku a je zřejmé, že je úzce spjata s jazykovými a komunikačními prostředky. Navzdory tomuto úzkému vztahu se lingvistika výzkumu této tématické oblasti dosud neúčastnila. Předkládaná dizertace poukazuje na to, že pragmalingvistika má k dispozici potřebné metody pro zkoumání fenoménu důvěry a zodpovězení relevantních otázek. Zároveň představuje práce nový metodologický přístup, který umožňuje studium procesu podpory důvěry na základě lingvistické operacionalizace tohoto fenoménu. Dizertace se zabývá procesem získávání důvěry a péče o ní pomocí jazykových prostředků. „Důvěrotvorné“ komunikativní procesy jsou zde chápány jako specifický typ komunikativního jednání, jež vede ke vzniku a udržení pozitivního image důvěryhodnosti. Operacionalizace tohoto procesu představuje základní hypotézu dizertační práce. Vyvinutý teoretický model byl následně aplikován v případové studii zkoumající texty německé neziskové organizace Nadace Brücke/Most, jež aktivně působí na poli česko-německých vztahů. S použitím metody pragmatické analýzy stylu bylo možné identifikovat a popsat hlavní prostředky, které tato organizace používá za účelem prezentace své důvěryhodnosti. Tyto prostředky dohromady vytváří potenciál studovaných textů podporovat důvěru.
