Australian Aborigenes and the Policy of Assimilation

Abstract:

Problémy medzi bielou populáciou a pôvodnými obyvateľmi v Austrálii existujú už veľmi dlho. Biela populácia vyskúšala rôzne stratégie na začlenenie Austrálskych domorodcov do novej spoločnosti. Cieľom tejto diplomovej práce je preskúmať možné následky politického hnutia, ktorá bola zameraná na asimiláciu pôvodných obyvateľov (ako napríklad následky na ich spôsob života, kultúru alebo pocit identity). Pri popisovaní rôznych praktík ktoré boli uplatňované pri násilných odlúčeniach detí od ich rodičov čerpám z príbehu Rabbit-Proof Fence. Aktuálne následky tejto politiky demonštrujem pomocou filmu The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith a projektu Bringing Them Home. Môj výskum potvrdil, že pôvodní obyvatelia boli utláčaní po stáročia a neboli im garantované rovnaké práva ako ostatným Austrálčanom. Toto zaobchádzanie v nich vyvolalo sociálnu a mentálnu nestabilitu a následne viedlo k ich podriadenému postaveniu v súčasnej spoločnosti.

Abstract:

The ‘Aboriginal problem’ is a very old one in Australia. Since 1788 white Australians have tried various political and non-political strategies to assimilate the Aboriginal population into the white society. This thesis examines the possible impacts of the assimilation policy on the life, culture and sense of identity of the Indigenous peoples. I draw on the story of Rabbit-Proof Fence to portray the various practices that were used during the forced separations, and the film The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith and the Bringing Them Home project to exemplify the actual consequences of the policy. The research shows that for centuries the Indigenous people were oppressed and could not enjoy equal rights with the white population; this caused social and mental instability among them and consequently led to their inferior position in Australia.
