Relations between the Czechoslovak and Yugoslav Government-in-Exile, 1941-1945

Abstract:

V této disertační práci se pokoušíme popsat dějiny vztahů československé a jugoslávské exilové vlády během jejich společného pobytu v britském exilu mezi let 1941–1945, dále srovnat strukturu a zejména podoby a proměny spolupráce obou provizorních státní zřízení. Naším cílem bylo identifikovat hlavní oblasti spolupráce těchto dvou exilových vlád a také vystihnout projevy dlouhodobých tendencí československo-jugoslávských vztahů pomocí srovnání se vztahy v jiných úsecích 20. století. V tomto spisu popisujeme také dějiny kontaktů mezi rodícím se československým exilem a Jugoslávií v letech 1939–1941, a také mezi československou exilovou vládou a hnutím jugoslávských partyzánů v letech 1943–1945. Disertační práce je založena na analýze úředních pramenů československé a jugoslávské provenience, a dále na literatuře deníkové, memoárové, na dobových publikacích a periodikách. Na těchto pramenech založený obraz poté s pomocí sekundární literatury zasazujeme do kontextu československých a jugoslávských dějin. V této práci analyzujeme zejména akce oficiální zahraniční politiky, nevyhýbáme se nicméně ani popisům osobních postojů aktérů popisovaných událostí, jejichž medailony uvádíme v příloze.

Abstract:

In this doctoral thesis, we attempt to describe the history of the relations between the Czechoslovak and Yugoslav government-in-exile during their joint sojourn in British exile between 1941–1945; to compare the structure and especially the forms and development of cooperation of these provisional governments. Our goal was to identify the main areas of cooperation between these two governments-in-exile and also to capture the essential elements of long-term trends in Czechoslovak-Yugoslav relations by means of a comparison with relations during the other periods of the 20th century. In this study, we also analyze the history of contacts between the nascent Czechoslovak exile institutions and Yugoslavia in the years 1939–1941, as well as between the Czechoslovak government-in-exile and the Yugoslav partisan movement in the years 1943–1945. The dissertation is based on the analysis of official sources of Czechoslovak and Yugoslav provenance, as well as on the literature consisting of diaries, memoirs, contemporary publications and periodicals. The resulted picture is then put into the context of Czechoslovak and Yugoslav history with the help of secondary literature. In this work, we mainly analyze the actions of the official foreign policy, but we do not avoid descriptions of the personal attitudes of the participants of the described events, whose medallions are listed in the appendix.
