Interparental conflict and adolescent suicidal behavior

Abstract:

Práce se věnuje tématu suicidality u dětí střední adolescence a vztahu ke známým rizikovým faktorům se zvláštním zaměřením na vnímání rodičovského konfliktu. V teoretické části je vymezena klíčová role rodiny a období střední adolescence s důrazem na sebevražedný vývoj. Suicidalitě a dřívějším výzkumům je věnována samostatná kapitola. Poté jsou představeny významné teorie osvětlující dopad rodičovského konfliktu na dítě: teorie emoční jistoty, kognitivně-kontextuální ráme, specifický emoční model. Výzkum využívá tyto metody: CPIC – Škála dětské percepce konfliktu mezi rodiči, IPPA – Dotazník citové vazby k rodičům a vrstevníkům, PAQ – Škála sebehodnocení dítěte, CASPI – Dotazník sebevražedného rizika pro děti a adolescenty. Suicidální respondenti byli stanoveni na podkladě dvou přístupů: metodou (A) respondenti s velmi vysokou mírou psychosociálního stresu, tedy ve vysokém riziku pro sebevražedné jednání; a metodou (B) respondenti, kteří uvedli suicidální ideace nebo fantazie o vlastní smrti nebo dřívější zkušenost se suicidálním pokusem. Výzkumem bylo potvrzeno vyšší sebevražedné riziko v souvislosti s vnímaným rodičovským konfliktem, nikoliv s rozvodem. Významným elementem rodičovského konfliktu s nežádoucím efektem na dítě byl pocit ohrožení (hrozba, kterou dítě vnímá jako vyplývající z konfliktní situace mezi rodiči, a nemožnost ovlivnit konflikt). Suicidální respondenti vykazovali statisticky významně nižší důvěru k otci a matce. Naopak v osobnostních charakteristikách uváděli daleko vyšší míru agrese a hostility, negativního sebepojetí, emoční lability a pesimismu. Některé charakteristiky byly statisticky průkazné pouze v jednom případě dělení suicidálních respondentů (metoda A nebo B): vyšší triangulace (zatažení do konfliktu) byla prokázána u suicidálních respondentů (metodou A), slabší důvěra ke kamarádům u suicidálních respondentů (metodou B), slabší tendence k závislosti u suicidálních (metodou B). Výsledky této studie jsou porovnávány s dřívějšími zjištěními. Na závěr jsou předloženy návrhy rozšíření výzkumu do budoucna ve snaze nalézt spolehlivé prediktory a zmírnit suicidalitu adolescentů.

Abstract:

This Thesis deals with the suicidal behavior of adolescents (14 to 16 years old) in relation to certain well known risk factors, especially the perceived interparental conflict. In the theoretical part, the key role of family and the period of middle adolescence are explained with emphasis on the development of suicidal behavior. The features of suicidality and empirical findings are presented in a separate chapter. Subsequently, main theories dealing with the impact of marital discord on the child are clarified: emotional security theory, cognitive-contextual framework, and specific emotion model. In the empirical study the following methods are used: CPIC – Children’s Perception of Interparental Conflict Scale, IPPA – The Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment, PAQ – Personality Assessment Questionnaire, CASPI – Child-Adolescent Suicidal Potential Index. Suicidal respondents are determined by two approaches: (A) the respondents with very high level of psychosocial stress (recommendation of the author of questionnaire CASPI as the sign of high suicidal risk); and (B) the respondents with suicidal ideation or fantasies about their death or with the history of suicidal attempt. In the results, the perceived interparental conflict, not the divorce, was confirmed as the important aspect for higher suicidal risk of adolescents. The perceived threat (high danger resulting from the conflict situation as perceived by the child and inability to influence the conflict) is the main feature of interparental conflict responsible for child maladjustment. Statistically significant differences between suicidal and non-suicidal adolescents were also seen in their security with their mother and father, which was lower in suicidal respondents. On the contrary, they achieved higher levels in personal characteristics such as aggression and hostility, negative self-perception, emotional instability and pessimism. Some differences were proven to be statistically significant only by one method (A or B) of determination of suicidal respondents: stronger triangulation (being drawn into the conflict between parents) was found in suicidal respondents (method A), weaker security with peers in suicidal respondents (method B), lower dependence (higher self-sufficiency) in suicidal respondents (method B). The results of this study are compared with the presented empirical findings. Furthermore, new topics for future research are suggested in order to find sensitive predictors and reduce adolescent suicidal behavior.
