How Frightening Really Was the 2016 Remain Campaign? Discursive Construction of Project Fear

Abstract:

Před referendem o členství Spojeného království v Evropské unii v roce 2016 byla kampaň Remain jejími oponenty notoricky označovaná jako tzv. „Projekt strach“, což znamená, že představitelé Remain používali převážně negativní argumenty o důsledcích odchodu z EU jako svou hlavní strategii. Můj předchozí výzkum přesto ukázal převládající pozitivní konotaci v projevech Davida Camerona. Na základě mé bakalářské práce je cílem této práce analyzovat projevy tří hlavních představitelů Remain: Davida Camerona, Georgea Osborna a Jeremyho Corbyna a určit, do jaké míry skutečně odpovídaly pojmu Projekt strach. Za tímto účelem práce kombinuje dvě metody: obsahovou analýzu k identifikaci oblastí, v nichž převládaly negativní konotace, a diskurzivní analýzu k hlubšímu porozumění jazyka těchto politiků.

Abstract:

In the 2016 referendum on the United Kingdom’s membership in the Eu-ropean Union, the Remain campaign was notoriously labelled as the Pro-ject fear by its opponents and in media coverage, meaning that the Re-mainers were using predominantly negative arguments about the conse-quences of leaving the EU as their main strategy. Yet, my previous re-search has shown prevailing positive connotations in the David Cam-eron’s speeches. Building on my bachelor’s thesis, the aim of this thesis is to analyze the speeches of the three leading Remainers: David Cam-eron, George Osborne, and Jeremy Corbyn, and identify to which extent they really corresponded with the Project fear notion. To that end, the thesis combines two methods: content analysis to identify in which areas negative connotations prevailed and discursive analysis to provide deeper insight into the language of these politicians.
