Modelling climatic niche of invasive plant species

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce si kladla za cíl namodelovat potenciální rozšíření severoamerických druhů dřevin v Evropě, k čemuž využila poznatky z invazní ekologie a teorie modelování rozšíření druhů. Na základě dat o výskytu druhů v Severní Americe společně s klimatickými proměnnými byl dvěma modelovacími metodami (Maxent a Random Forests) vytvořen soubor map zobrazující oblasti, ve kterých by se mohly druhy teoreticky vyskytovat. Základním předpokladem pro tento postup je analogie klimatických podmínek mezi Severní Amerikou a Evropou, která byla v této práci potvrzena. Výsledky pro Severní Ameriku ukazují, že většina modelů je vypočítána s vysokou přesností, aktuální výskyt vybraných druhů tak odpovídá namodelovaným oblastem rozšíření. Špatné a nepřesné modely byly vytvořeny pouze v několika případech. Projekce modelů na evropský kontinent ukazují s danou přesností oblasti, které by mohly být náchylné k šíření severoamerických druhů dřevin. Jedná se o teplejší oblasti s vysokým úhrnem srážek, které v Evropě odpovídají západní části Balkánského poloostrova, Pádské nížině či svahům Kavkazu.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis was to create models of potential distribution of North American tree species in Europe by using knowledge of invasion ecology and species distribution modelling. A set of maps showing areas where the species could theoretically occur was created by two methods (Maxent and Random Forests) based on occurencies from North America and the climatic variables. The basic assumption for this approach was the analogy of the climatic conditions between North America and Europe, which was confirmed in this thesis. Results for North America proves that most models were calculated with high accuracy which implies that the current occurencies correspond to the modeled areas. Poor and inaccurate models were created just in a few cases. The projection of the North American models to Europe shows areas that might be vulnerable to the spread of alien species of trees. Resulting areas are those with warmer climate and high precipitation rate – eg. the western part of Balkan peninsula, the Padan Plain or slopes of Caucasus.
