Possibilities of preparation and use of rigid gels from gellan and the complex restoration of the oil painting Madonna and Child Jesus from the Kroměříž Museum

Abstract:

Diplomová práce v první části předkládá rozsáhlý průzkum a komplexní restaurátorský zásah na závěsném obraze Madona s Ježíškem z Muzea Kroměřížska. Jedná se o olejomalbu na plátně, jejichž autor a datace nejsou známé. V rámci podrobného průzkumu byl obraz datován do roku 1753 a jako hypotetický autor byl určen okruh olomouckého barokního malíře Jana Kryštofa Handkeho. Druhá část práce se zabývá možností citlivějšího přístupu při procesu čištění za použití rigidních gelů se zaměřením na gellan. Práce sumarizuje informace o využití rigidních gelů s důrazem na gellan a jeho využití v restaurátorské praxi. Teoretická část se poté hlouběji zaměřuje na možnosti přípravy a využití gelů z gellanu při čištění výtvarných děl se zaměřením na citlivost vodorozpustných barevných vrstev. Na teoretickou část navazuje volně experimentální část, která se zaobírá recepturami vybraných gelů, zkoumáním základních vlastností vzniklých gelů v porovnání s komerčně dostupnými gely na trhu a jejich účinnost při aplikaci.

Abstract:

The first part of the diploma thesis presents an comprehensive examinations and complex restoration intervention on the painting Madonna and Child Jesus from the Kroměříž Museum. It is an oil painting on canvas, whose author and date are unknown. As part of the thorough research, the painting was dated to 1753 and Baroque painter Jan Kryštof Handke from Olomouc was identified as the hypothetical author. The second part of the thesis deals with the possibility of a more sensitive approach to the cleaning process using rigid gels, focusing on gellan. The thesis collects information on the application of rigid gels with a specific attention to gellan and its use in restoration practice. The theoretical section then looks in further detail at the possibilities of preparing and using gellan while cleaning artworks, concentrating on the sensitivity of water-soluble paint layers. The theoretical part is then followed by a loosely experimental part that deals with the recipes of selected gels, investigating the basic characteristics of the resulting gels in comparison with commercially obtainable gels on the market and their effectiveness
