Plane-fronted gravitational waves with parallel propagation

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá studiem rovného časoprostoru, na jehož pozadí se šíří gravitační vlna. Linearizovaná teorie gravitačních vln byla v nedávné době experimentálně potvrzena, avšak metrický tensor popisující tento časoprostor splňuje Einsteinovu vakuovou rovnici pouze do prvního řádu v příspěvku h_ab, což je část, která popisuje tvar gravitační vlny. V nelineární teorii gravitačních vln vystupuje metrický tensor, který explicitně splňuje Einsteinovu vakuovou rovnici. Rovnice, které slouží k popisu tohoto časoprostoru jsou mnohdy komplikovanější a jejich interpretace obtížnější. V této práci byl tento aparát aplikován na rovinnou gravitační vlnu a její vliv na zakřivení prostoročasu byl zkoumán pomocí systému testovacích částic. Výpočty odhalily nečekaný efekt v podobě fokusování částic do počátku souřadnicového systému.

Abstract:

This thesis concerns itself with the study of flat space-time with a gravitational wave propagating on its background. The linearised theory of gravitational waves, recently confirmed experimentally, describes this space-time with a metric tensor that fulfills the Einstein vaccum equation only up to the first order in h_ab, i.e. the term that defines the gravitational wave. In the fully nonlinear theory of gravitational waves, the metric tensor is given in a form that satisfies the Einstein vaccum equation explicitly. As a downside, the resulting equations become more involved and their interpretation more difficult. In this thesis, we employed the nonlinear theory for investigation of a planar gravitational wave and subsequently studied its impact on the space-time curvature using the framework of test particles. The calculations revealed an unexpected focusing effect that the gravitational wave can have on the matter.
