The United Kingdom and its power politics after Brexit

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce je zmapovat současnou mocenskou politiku Spojeného království po brexitu. Ústřední hypotéza vychází z toho, že dotyčný stát má příležitost upevnit si status samostatné velmoci a zvýšit svoje působení ve světě mimo EU. Na základě toho se autor snaží nalézt odpověď na otázku, zda brexit pomohl posílit britskou mocenskou politiku a vliv v mezinárodních vztazích. K tomu se přistupovalo v několika krocích. Nejprve se zkoumaly změny v domácích kapacitách (hard a soft power) a poté se pozornost zaměřila přímo na politiku, u niž došlo k aplikaci vybrané případy po roce 2020 (válka na Ukrajině, pandemie COVID-19 a indopacifický region). Výsledky výzkumu následně dokazují, že Spojené království po odchodu dosud nenaplnilo očekávání ohledně výraznějšího mocenského projevu. Můžou za to především malé změny v kapacitách a nedostatečná odezva ve světě. Z tohoto důvodu nemůžeme v tuto chvíli potvrdit hypotézu o posílení.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to map the current power politics of the United Kingdom after Brexit. The central hypothesis is based on the fact that the state has the opportunity to consolidate its status as an independent great power as well as increase its influence in the world outside the EU. Based on this, the author tries to find an answer to the question whether Brexit helped to strengthen British power politics and influence in international relations. The approach was taken in several steps. First, changes in domestic capacities (hard and soft power) were examined. Then attention focused directly on the policy which was applied on selected cases after 2020 (the war in Ukraine, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Indo-Pacific region). The results of the research subsequently prove that the United Kingdom has not yet fulfilled the expectations regarding a stronger display of power after leaving. This is primarily due to small changes in capacities together with insufficient response in the world. For that reason, we cannot confirm the hypothesis about reinforcement at this time.
