Abstract:

Aplikace zabezpečení, jako je letecký průzkum, rozpoznání poznávacích značek a rozpoznávání otisků prstů, často zachycují fotografie v nekontrolovaném prostředí. Nízký kontrast je jedním z několika deformací, které mohou ovlivnit kvalitu těchto obrazů. Vyrovnání histogramu je jednou z populárních a výpočetně efektivních technik ke zvýšení kontrastu. V této práci studujeme několik histogramových vyrovnávacích technik založených na kontrastu, analyzujeme jejich omezení a nakonec navrhujeme novou techniku ​​ke zvýšení kontrastu. Tato technika je označována jako ekvivalence histogramu na základě obrysu (CBHE). CBHE zachycuje okolní vlastnosti kolem pixelu pomocí obrysů a poté mapuje intenzity pomocí transformační funkce. Obrysy zachycují strukturální tvar objektu. CBHE na základě těchto obrysů vylepšuje kontrast. Dále práce porovnává výstup CBHE s výkonem několika dalších technik pro zvýšení kontrastu přes obrazové datové sady specifické pro bezpečnostní aplikace. Kvantitativní posouzení výstupů se provádí za použití všech opatření týkajících se kvality obrazu, která jsou zvažována různými zvažovanými technikami. To dává objektivní a všestranné hodnocení. Průměrná hodnost každého algoritmu je vypočtena na základě skóre získaného měřením kvality obrazu na různých datových množinách. Subjektivní hodnocení hodnotí schopnost algoritmů zabránit saturaci, artefaktům a reakci na snímky s vysokým kontrastem. Dále analyzujeme schopnost algoritmů zesilovat strukturální tvar objektů výpočtem jejich okrajových obrazů. Práce vyvrcholí studiem vlivu kontrastu a degradace rozlišení na obrazy.

Abstract:

Security applications like aerial reconnaissance, number plate recognition and fingerprint recognition often capture photographs in uncontrolled environments. Low contrast is one of the several distortions which may affect quality of such images. Histogram equalisation is one the popular and computationally efficient techniques to enhance contrast. In this work we study several histogram equalisation based contrast enhancement techniques, analyse their limitations and finally propose a novel technique to enhance contrast. The technique is referred to as Contour Based Histogram Equalisation (CBHE). CBHE captures the neighbourhood characteristics around a pixel using contours and then maps the intensities using a transformation function. Contours capture the structural shape of an object. CBHE performs contrast enhancement based upon these contours. Next, the work compares the output of CBHE with that of several other contrast enhancement techniques over image datasets specific to security applications. The quantitative assessment of the outputs is carried out using all image quality measures considered by different techniques under consideration. This gives an unbiased and all-inclusive assessment. Average rank of each algorithm is calculated based upon the score attained by image quality measures over different datasets. Subjective assessment evaluates the capability of the algorithms in arresting saturation, artefacts and response towards high contrast images. Next, we analyse the ability of the algorithms to amplify structural shape of objects by calculating their edge images. The thesis culminates with the study of effect of contrast and resolution degradation on images.
