Death of Celebrity: analysis of media reprezentation

Abstract:

Práce se zaměřuje na porovnání způsobů reprezentace úmrtí tří významných osobností (Ivana Hlinky, Karla Svobody a Michaela Jacksona) v českém bulvárním (Blesk) a seriózním (Hospodářské noviny, Mladá fronta Dnes a Právo) tisku. Konkrétně pomocí obsahové analýzy ověřuje, zda obecné rozdíly pozorované mezi bulvárním a seriózním tiskem, jsou přítomny i v tomto zvoleném vzorku. Dále se také zabývá rolí přechodových rituálů ve vybraném seriózním a bulvárním titulu – v Blesku a Právu, homogenitou prezentovaných sdělení a rozdíly mezi nimi. Z analyzovaných dat vyplývá, že bulvární titul se ve svém přístupu i v těchto případech liší od titulů seriózních. O úmrtí osobností informuje Blesk kvantitativně více, sdělení jsou doprovázena větším množstvím fotografií, vyznívají negativněji a konfliktní potenciál je akcentován. Jednoduchá opozice bulvární vs. seriózní tisk však není dostačující, protože mezi jednotlivými seriózními tituly existují poměrně značné rozdíly. Role přechodových rituálů v mediálních obsazích je pak více ovlivněna povahou události než povahou média. Sdělení jsou prezentována homogennějším způsobem v bulvárním titulu.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on comparison of treatment of death of three well-known personalities (Ivan Hlinka, Karel Svoboda and Michael Jackson) in Czech tabloid (Blesk) and quality press (Hospodářské noviny, Mladá fronta Dnes and Právo). Particulary, the presence of general differencies between the tabloid press and the quality press in the selected sample is examined by using the content analysis. Furthermore, the thesis deals with the homogenity of the articles in selected quality and tabloid press - Právo and Blesk, then with the role of the rites of passage and finally with the comparison of their differencies. The data analysis shows that the tabloid press differs from the quality press in presentation of the three events. The tabloid newspapers inform more about the death of the personalities, there are more photographs attached to the articles, with accented conflict and negativity. Simple contrast of the tabloid and the quality press is not sufficient because of detected differencies among the quality newspapers. In media, the role of the rites of passage is influenced by the type of the event rather than the type of the press. The statements are presented in the tabloid newspaper in more homogenous way.
