Improving the ability to discern misinformation with active inoculation: gamified approach and its validation on the Czech population

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá evalvací efektivity edukativní hry Bad News ve zlepšení schop-nosti jejích hráčů úspěšně identifikovat reálné případy dezinformačních zpráv. Tím-to navazuje na sérii výzkumů autorů Jona Roozenbeeka, Sander van der Lindena, Cecilie Traberg a dalších, jejichž studie ve výzkumná část této práce konceptuálně replikuje. Smyslem replikování výzkumu bylo ověření kulturní přenositelnosti této hry do českého kontextu. Práce tedy odpovídá na následující výzkumné otázky – jsou hráči hry Bad News po jejím odehrání úspěšnější a sebejistější v identifikaci dezin-formačních příspěvků? Má odehrání hry nějaký vliv i na reálné, tedy nedezinformační zprávy? Data získaná od celkem 90 účastníků výzkumu tuto efektivitu a kulturní přenositelnost potvrzuje. Odehrání zhruba patnáctiminutové webové hry poskytuje jejím hráčům psychologickou odolnost proti reálným dezinformacím, které využívají tech-niky obsažené ve hře, proti kterým byli její hráči inokulováni. Po odehrání hry též participanti hodnotili nedezinformační zprávy jako důvěryhodnější, což poukazuje na zlepšení i ve schopnosti truth discernment.

Abstract:

This paper evaluates the effectiveness of the educational game Bad News in improv-ing the ability of its players to successfully identify real cases of misinformation. The design builds on a series of research by Jon Roozenbeek, Sander van der Linden, Cecilie Traberg, and others, whose studies the research part of this thesis conceptu-ally replicates. The purpose of replicating the research was to test the cultural trans-ferability of the game to the Czech context. The thesis, therefore, answers the fol-lowing research questions - are players of Bad News more successful and confident in identifying misinformation after playing the game? Does playing the game have any effect on real, i.e., non-disinformation news? Data collected from 90 research participants confirm this effectiveness and its transferability - playing a roughly 15-minute game provides its players with psycho-logical resilience against real disinformation that uses techniques contained in the game that its players have been inoculated against. After playing the game, partici-pants also rated the non-disinformation news as more credible, indicating an impro-vement in truth discernment skills as well.
